“Daisy Douglas,” she says with her cheeks still burning.
I glance back at Coco and the approaching lions. “Do you trust me, Daisy?”
She looks at me for a moment and then nods her head. “I do.”
I squeeze her hand. “Then, grab onto my back and come with me.”
“Get them both back here!” Coco hisses at the lions. “Now!”
Daisy grabs onto my shoulders and wraps her legs around me in a piggyback position. I’m just about to take off into the mountains when the largest, meanest of the three lions arrives. He leaps into the air, lunging at me with his teeth and claws out.
I dart my hand out and catch him, wrapping my fingers around his neck. With a grunt, I add my strength to his momentum and slam him face-first into the ground.
It hurts him. Badly. He cowers back with a whimper as I stand there, body flexed and challenging the remaining two with a fierce stare.
They hesitate and hang back, prowling from side to side.
“You follow us and I’ll make you pay for it with your lives,” I warn them all in a loud booming voice.
I make sure they know I’m serious and then I take off into the mountains with my mate clinging to my back.
I run as fast as I can through the forest, being careful to avoid any branches. I have precious cargo I’m carrying and I don’t want her to get hurt.
The lions don’t follow us. No one does.
I leap over a small creek and continue up the steep mountain. The glow of the full moon is lighting up my path. I almost stop and turn to see how beautiful my mate looks in the moonlight, but there will be time for that later—there will be a whole lifetime for moments like that. Right now, I have to get her as far from those sociopaths as I can get her.
It’s hard to focus on the task with her hands on my skin. Every time she slides her fingers on me or shifts positions, jolts of excitement rip through my veins. I still can’t believe I found my mate. It hasn’t quite sunken in yet.
“Where are we going?” she eventually asks.
“One of my employees converted an old hunting cabin into an Airbnb,” I tell her. “It’s a long way away, but we should be safe there for the night.”
“Thank you,” she whispers. “For saving me.”
I huff out a laugh. “It looked to me like you didn’t need my help at all. You saved yourself.”
“No,” she says in a soft voice that makes my heart beat extra hard. “It was because of you. If it weren’t for you, I’d still be there, facing an even angrier Lincoln McCormick.”
The sound of his name fills me with fury. So, that’s the name of the dead man who was grabbing and dragging my mate. That’s the man who thought he could buy what belongs to me. That’s the man I’m going to spend the rest of my life dreaming about killing.
“Did he bid on you?” It takes everything I have to keep my voice level.
“Yes.”
“And you married him?”
“I didn’t want to. I didn’t say the words, so I don’t think it’s official.”
“It’s not official,” I growl. “We’re mates and that’s all you need to worry about. I’ll take care of this Lincoln McCormick if he ever comes back.”
“Thank you,” she says as she holds me a little tighter. “You’re a good man, Warren. I’m glad you’re my mate.”
My heart nearly gives out at hearing her say that.
I hold my girl and run a little faster, excited to get her to safety. But even more excited to get her alone.
Chapter Six
Daisy
Warren slows to a stop when we arrive at an adorable little log cabin in the woods. It’s the perfect place for a couple looking to escape the outside world for some loving in front of a wood fire.
He puts me down and walks onto the small porch, looking for a key. My greedy eyes roam over his hulking back muscles and even though I tell myself that I’ll be respectful and not look, my eyes almost immediately drop down to his nice round ass.
Heat swirls through my body, emanating from my core and settling between my legs as I look him over. His thighs are so muscular. His arms are rock-hard and perfectly sculpted. His chest is wider than any human chest I’ve ever seen and his six-pack is pure art. He’s breathtakingly gorgeous and the thought of spending the night with him is stirring up all sorts of sensations, emotions, and desires that I didn’t know were in me.
I have no idea what to expect. I have no idea what this night will entail, but I can’t wait to find out. I feel like I’ll never be able to say no to this man. I feel like I would do anything he asked of me.
