I watched as Remy’s eyes widened and I tried my hardest not to let my jaw drop to the floor in shock. Of all the things I needed right then, I really didn’t need a weekend away with the woman I was just jerking off to over the weekend. A small part of me, however, relished the idea and I tried my best to push it as far down as possible. I couldn’t afford to mess this up.

“You two are just so lucky,” Kelly continued with a gleeful grin. “You don’t know how many people would love to be in your shoes. You get to mix business with pleasure! So lucky.” With one last smile at the both of us, Kelly turned on her heels and strode out of the office as fast as she’d come in.

“I’ll see you in Chicago!” she called as she shut the door behind her.

There was nothing I was dreading more than seeing Kelly again in Chicago.

The week just flew by. Before I’d even realized it, it was Friday and Griff and I were on our way to Chicago for the packaging materials conference. Our seats on the flight were next to each other, but we barely spoke a word. I buried myself in my fashion magazine while Griff typed away on the laptop, actually like everything was business as usual. I expected this kind of brush off, of course, but it still hurt a little. I wanted us to hurry up and get past the awkward stage and go back to being comfortable with each other again.

But Chicago seemed to only pose further problems for both of us.

After we were directed to our hotel room by the concierge, Griff and I hurried down the hallway to the door. Once Griff slid the electronic key against the lock, the door opened and revealed a much bigger and far more beautiful room than I had expected. It was furnished with thick, plush blankets and cushions. The view outside was scenic and unburdened by other buildings. But there was no time for me to enjoy any of that. Instead, both Griff and I had our eyes focused on the one issue with the room: there was only one bed.

When I turned to look at Griff, I saw that his expression was pained. I didn’t understand it. After our kiss, I knew he didn’t want anything else to happen between us, but even if it did, surely that wasn’t such a bad thing. I thought I was good-looking enough for a guy like Griff and the heat we shared during our accidental kiss was practically scalding. Anxiety welled up inside me as I considered that maybe I was wrong. Perhaps Griff hadn’t felt as strongly as me about the kiss. Perhaps I had imagined it.

If that was true, sleeping next to such a handsome man every night was going to be absolute torture.

“Okay, there’s no way around it, I guess,” I finally said, breaking the silence between us. “If we need to, I’ll sleep on the floor.”

“No way,” Griff immediately stated as he opened up his suitcase and began unpacking. “The floor is uncomfortable and we’re both adults. I promise to keep things professional between us.”

“Okay,” I agreed, still feeling a little uneasy at being placed in a situation that I’d fantasised about for so long. Still, there wasn’t much that could be done and it was only for a few nights, so I mimicked Griff and began to unpack my belongings. I pulled open the curtains a little more to let the afternoon sun stream in through the windows. Chicago really was a beautiful place and I was determined to think positively about the whole situation.

“Knock, knock!” came a voice from the door. Griff rushed over to open it and I was unimpressed to see it was Kelly.

“Good afternoon, Kelly,” Griff greeted in a stiff but polite tone.

“Sorry to barge in on you like this,” she began, looking as though she wasn’t sorry at all. “But some of the other corporate employees have all decided to go out for dinner tonight and I’d like for you both to join us!”

She phrased it in a way that left no room for us to decline. It was clearly an instruction. My eyes wandered over to Griff, but he showed no signs of emotion. He just nodded in Kelly’s direction. “Sure, that sounds like fun,” he told her.

“Great! We’re meeting at the bar at six, I’ll see you then!” With a wide, brazen smile, Kelly turned and let herself out of the room once again. I was more than glad to see the back of her red head.

However, Griff just continued unpacking like he didn’t have a care in the world. It was kind of irritating and I longed for him to share what he was really feeling with me. “Do you think we should be worried?” I asked as I worried my bottom lip with my teeth. “I mean, she’s still on our backs about this whole relationship thing. If she’s not convinced by now, I’m worried about what it might take.”
