Things were starting to work for his family, but none of it mattered if Jayna left him.
“I’ve got to ask,” Sienna began. “If she does take that job, do you honestly still want me around? I know Cindy’s coming back in a couple of weeks and there might not be . . .”
“Job? What job?”
“She didn’t mention that, either, did she? Of course not.” She shook her head. “I’m sorry, Quaid. She’s my sister. I shouldn’t have said anything. You’re going to have to ask her about it.”
“Of course.” There was already a job offer on the table, and she hadn’t mentioned that, either. Damn it. He’d started the day thinking it would be good to get back to work because he could spend time with Jayna, and now he had to wonder if she was even planning on being here in a week. It was too soon. He couldn’t leave with her. It would take him months to get everything in order. He would have to find someone to take over his practice. He couldn’t leave the town high and dry.
She wasn’t going to ask him to come with her. He was making plans that he didn’t need to because if she hadn’t told him these very important things about her life, she wasn’t about to ask him to share it with her.
And what could he say? She hadn’t promised him anything. She’d told him the exact opposite, but he’d decided she didn’t mean it. How could she not feel what he felt? How could this be one-sided?
“So should I look for another job?” Sienna asked quietly. “It’s okay if you hired me to please Jayna. She can be persuasive.”
“No, the offer was real. She might have been the one to think of it, but she was right. I need to start planning and honestly, having more hands around will help.” He wasn’t sure what to do. He wanted to walk out and find Jayna and get her in bed. She seemed to understand that they belonged together when they were in bed.
The door came open and Jayna walked through, carrying her briefcase and her heels. He’d noticed she’d started wearing a pair of bright pink flip-flops until she actually walked into court and then she slipped on her heels. He would bet she would never have prioritized her own comfort when she worked in New Orleans. She stopped when she realized he was standing there, and he got the feeling her surprise wasn’t the good kind. “Hey, you’re here. I thought your mom had rehab this afternoon.”
“I’m picking her up in an hour.” He’d been hoping he could convince her to come back with him.
Sienna settled her bag on her shoulder. “I’m going to lunch. I’ll be back in a while. You two should probably talk.” She winced her sister’s way. “I’m sorry. I thought you told him about the job and the ethics case being dismissed.”
Jayna’s hand tightened around the strap of her bag, and she nodded her sister’s way. “I was planning on talking to him when he came back to work next week. Don’t worry about it. You have a nice lunch. I’ll see you when you get back.”
Sienna’s gaze darted between the two of them as though she wasn’t sure she should leave them alone, but she finally made her way out the door. It closed behind her and he was alone with the woman he loved, the one for whom his love might not be enough.
Had she ever given them a chance? Or had it truly all been about sex for her? Had he been some conquest, a way to get back at him for not noticing her when she was younger?
“I didn’t expect you back in the office until next week.”
“I thought I would come and see if I could take you to dinner later tonight.”
“I’ve got a call this evening with the attorney I want to hire in LA,” she replied, moving toward the stairs. “I was at city hall all day trying to come up with some kind of plan to save the library. The funds we have available can’t match what a developer will offer, and I’ve met your client. I would definitely say she’s not the reading kind. I came back to feed Luna and make that call. Did you look over the entertainment lawyer’s credentials? Are you okay with hiring him?”
He followed Jayna and Luna up the stairs. Jayna had been working on getting Paul’s movie back in his hands, and she’d found an excellent way to do it. He could have his movie on the festival circuit this fall if everything went according to Jayna’s plan. “I trust you. Hire him. Do what you need to. I’ll talk to my client about entertaining an offer from the city for the library land. Now can we talk?”
