Or he meant every word and she’d finally found the right man.

She shoved that thought out of her head because she couldn’t deal with it right now. Later she would pull it out and examine it, searching for the truth, but for now she needed to live in the moment.

She went on her toes and wrapped her arms around him and thanked the universe that Quaid was a man who came prepared.

“That’s my girl,” he whispered, his hands finding her hair. “You won’t regret taking the chance. I promise.”

She was going to argue with him, tell him she wasn’t taking any chances and hadn’t decided anything, but his mouth covered hers and she couldn’t think at all when he kissed her.

He wasn’t playing around this evening. His tongue surged in and stroked against hers as he pressed her against the wall. She was caught between the hard wall and Quaid’s big body.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave herself up to the kiss. Nothing mattered except this moment and this man. Yesterday couldn’t be fixed and tomorrow was a problem for another day.

Tonight she could be his.

Tonight he could be hers.

Quaid picked her up and carried her, though they didn’t have far to go. The room was small but it had a bed, and that was all he needed. Not that the lack of a bed would have changed his course. He would have done what it took to make her comfortable, but he had a point to make.

He’d known the minute she’d said it was her fault that he was being stubborn. She had real reasons to be worried, real recent trauma, and he was being petty. He’d been wrong. It was up to him to make it right, to show her he wasn’t going anywhere.

For the first time in his life, he genuinely considered leaving Papillon. If she needed a city to feel complete, he would do whatever he could to find someone to take over his practice, but he would follow her.

He held her close, pressing her body to his and reveling in her softness. “When I realized where you’d gone this afternoon, I should have marched right into your sister’s house, picked you up, and brought you home.”

“You would have had to fight two preteens,” she whispered between kisses. “I’ve been teaching them not to allow men to treat them like objects.”

So feminism had come to Papillon Gardens Trailer Park. Jayna could shake up the whole town, bringing her unique perspective to their world. And Papillon could teach Jayna that family was so much more than blood.

He kissed her over and over, wanting to surround her with his affection.

They moved together, her following his lead flawlessly as he eased them toward the bed.

He had to make her see they were perfect partners both in and out of the bedroom.

He could feel her breasts pressed against his chest and couldn’t stand the clothes between them. Stepping back slightly, he tugged his shirt over his head and tossed it to the side. She unbuttoned her blouse and he was on her again, his hands finding warm skin as he pulled her close and kissed her. He managed to twist the clasps of her bra, tossing it aside and dragging her close. Warmth spread through him, and it wasn’t all about how soft she felt against him. It wasn’t merely sexual but a sense of home he felt whenever he was with her.

It had been mere days, but she’d become the center of his world, the sun he orbited around.

“I don’t want to fight your family, baby. I want to get closer to them,” he said. “But we’re going to have to talk about mine.”

“Not now, Havery.”

She pulled away from him, and for a moment he thought he would have to fight for her to stay. Instead of running for the door, she slowly dropped to her knees in front of him.

“Baby,” he began but his body was already tuning up in anticipation. He’d been the one to perform this particular act, loving the way she tasted on his tongue, but he hadn’t felt her mouth on him before, and he tensed at the thought. “You’re going to kill me tonight, aren’t you? You’re going to make me crazy.”

Her hands went to the buckle of his belt, sliding it through the loop and unbuttoning his slacks. “You deserve it. The next time we’re in court, I want this to be the only thing you think about.”

She liked to play dirty.

But he didn’t protest when she eased his slacks down his hips, dragged off his boxers, and then took him in her hand, manicured fingers stroking him. He didn’t object when she leaned in and pressed a kiss on his most intimate flesh. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the feel of her mouth on him, lips and tongue moving over him, making him crazy.
