I stood there in stunned silence. “He’s eleven years older than me, Wyatt. I seriously doubt he has feelings for me. And he is not bad-mouthing you. He knows we’re engaged, and he is simply trying to be helpful for both of us. Help our relationship.”

Wyatt threw his hands up in defeat. “So, I’m always the one to blame? He spins everything around. My football practice didn’t allow me to attend that play you wanted to go to, so that was my fault. Well, what about the extra counseling appointment that he insisted you needed that kept you from coming to the banquet where I received an award?”

I sucked in a breath. “What? What banquet?”

Wyatt shook his head. “You know what? It doesn’t matter, Sky. I don’t want to fight. I especially don’t want to fight about him.”

He turned to walk back into the house when I grabbed his arm and pulled him to a stop. “Wyatt, wait. We promised each other we wouldn’t do this. Please talk to me.”

“The football banquet that was last month. I told you about it and marked it on your calendar. Doctor Perfect suggested a workshop that night, and you dropped everything to go to it. You didn’t even remember. I went alone, Skylar.”

My eyes instantly filled with tears. “Wyatt, why didn’t you say anything?”

He sighed. “Because I don’t want you thinking I’m against your sessions. But, Sky, you started going to counseling to deal with your fear and insecurities. Somehow, it’s turned into couples therapy, but I’m never there to defend myself.”

Everything came crashing down on me all at once. I was stronger and more confident, and there was no denying that had come from my sessions. But, lately, the sessions had had nothing to do with me or what had happened to me but everything to do with my relationship with Wyatt.

How could I have been so blind?

“Wyatt, I’m so sorry. I can’t believe I did that. I wish you had said something because I would have much rather been with you.”

He slowly lifted the corners of his mouth into a smile. “Skylar, none of that matters. The only thing that matters is us. I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you about it. I guess I’m still kind of learning how all of this works myself.”

I let out a soft chuckle. “I guess we’re both allowed a learning curve.”

Pulling me into his arms, Wyatt held on to me tightly. “I hate arguing with you.”

“Same. Let’s never do it again. And I’m sorry I picked a fight. This whole thing with Mitch and Michelle has me thrown.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you how I was feeling.”

“You voiced your concerns before, and I ignored it. I’m sorry.”

He winked. “Learning curve.”

“Absolutely.”

He pressed his lips to mine, and we quickly got lost in each other.

“How can you two be making out when Mitch is here with Beth?”

Wyatt let out a small sigh before taking a step back. His patience with Michelle was beginning to wear thin. I made a mental note to talk to Michelle about finding a place for herself.

“So?” I said.

A look of horror moved across Michelle’s face, and I was pretty sure that, for once in her life, she was stunned into silence.

I was positive, Wyatt was enjoying this.

CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

* * *

Wyatt

SWEET HEAVEN, IS that silence coming from Michelle?

I closed my eyes and let it settle in because I knew it was going to be short-lived.

“Skylar, did you hear what I said?” Michelle said.

That had lasted all of twenty seconds.

Skylar started to go back into the house. “Michelle, you have a boyfriend. You’ve moved on. Did you think Mitch wouldn’t?”

I internally fist-pumped. I was so proud of Skylar, I almost felt a tear building in my eye. She was staying out of their business.

As she followed Skylar into the house, it took Michelle a good fifteen seconds to realize what was happening.

“I don’t know. I mean, I guess I figured he would, but actually seeing it hurts more than I thought it would.”

I snorted, and Skylar shot me a dirty look. It wasn’t that I didn’t want Michelle and Mitch to be together because I did. I thought they were meant for each other. He loved her, and she clearly still loved him even though she was pretending to fall for Zeb. At some point though, I had given up right along with them. If they were meant to be, fate would make it happen.

“Well, we don’t even know if they are together, together,” Skylar said, stopping at the kitchen island and filling up a plate with cheese and crackers.

She picked it up and stopped. When she turned, I knew her defenses had fallen the moment she looked at Michelle and smiled.

“But I’ll do some recon work to see what I can find out.”
