“Hey.” She smiles when she sees me, and I can’t help but laugh.
“That bad?”
“It’s been a whirlwind day, and nothing but arguing, fighting, and yelling since all the kids came home.” She watches me kick off my shoes. “I came in here to hide for a few minutes.” I step into the empty tub and settle behind her.
“I’ll call Carrie and see if she wants to babysit this weekend and we can get away.”
“She has a boyfriend now, so I’m not sure she’ll be available.” She’s wrong; Carrie would do anything for Miranda or for any of us. But that feeling is mutual.
“Anna is ordering pizza.” I kiss the side of her head.
“That sounds good.” She relaxes into me then whispers. “I know one day I’m going to miss all the chaos, but today, I just needed a few minutes to myself.” She leans back against me, and I wrap my arms around her.
More than once over the years, I’ve found her just like this, hiding in our bathroom after a stressful day of work and being a mom, and I’ve never questioned it. Where she needs these quiet moments alone to decompress, I need her.
She’s the center of gravity for me, the thing that keeps me tethered to earth and reminds me every single day that although this world is fucked up, there is still so much beauty to experience while you’re here.
