“Yeah.” With his hands on his hips, Crew tilted his head and his gray eyes locked with Fletch’s. “Then, if she wasn’t made, why the hell did those motherfuckers show up and want to take her to Russo Jr. for a little chat?”

“Jr. thinks she was working with another crime family.”

Crew’s brow furrowed. “What the fuck? The Russos think whoever took out a contract on Sr. planted Nova on the inside?”

“Yeah, isn’t that some shit? They couldn’t be more wrong.”

“Who did they think she’s connected to?”

Fletch shrugged. “We don’t know. They never said. And, of course, dead men tell no tales.” One side of his mouth curled up in a half grin. He hated the situation they were in now, but he was glad those fuckers were no longer breathing.

“Isn’t that the fucking truth. I don’t know, brother… Unfortunately, this all made shit sticky.”

“Dispatching two men can do that. But it would’ve been stickier if they had lived.”

“True.” Crew studied Fletch’s face carefully. “Gotta ask… You okay with what you had to do?”

Some officers struggled with having to kill another human being, but Fletch had no qualms with taking down someone threatening Nova’s life. He would’ve had a harder time dealing with it if something had happened to her because he didn’t take that action. “Yeah, brother, I’m good.”

Crew nodded, then smirked. “PSP might make you sit down with a therapist so you can get in touch with your feelings.”

Fletch snorted. “Yeah, I was told it might be required. But it’s not me I’m worried about, it’s Nova. And not because of any emotional damage due to the shoot. She thought she was done with the Russos. They made it clear she’s not. That’s one of the things she’s currently discussing with her SAC. Crew,” he said more solemnly, “she was fucking badass this morning and how she reacted was proof she was an excellent choice for this task force. Throughout these last few weeks, she’s impressed me time and time again.”

“Not surprised. Her rep is why I chose her, brother. Know you might find this hard to believe, but I do know what the fuck I’m doing.”

“Sometimes,” Fletch said with a smirk.

“Not sure if she told you—my guess is she didn’t since I heard she’s not one to brag—but… she earned the FBI Shield of Bravery for a job she was on right before she went under with the Russos. Not many agents earn it.”

Fletch’s eyebrows shot up his forehead. “No shit? Damn. She didn’t say a fucking word. Hell, I’d be wearing that medal on a damn chain around my neck with a spotlight on my belt pointing up at it. But, seriously, it’s no surprise. She kept her cool, played her part as a scared woman like a fucking boss and then took out one of Russo’s soldiers without blinking. She would’ve taken the other one out, too, if I hadn’t crashed the party.”

“And if we’re sharing some truth, I wish like fuck you would’ve stayed clear, because now I might lose two task force officers, when it could’ve only been one.”

“Crew, look, there’s something you need to know…” Fletch sucked in a deep breath but before he could confess to what was going on between him and Nova, the older man shook his head.

“Yeah, figured you were both playing naked slap-and-tickle on the government’s payroll.”

“Should we have put it in the daily report?” Fletch joked.

“Only if you described everything in detail and even drew instructional diagrams.”

Fletch snorted. “It would’ve been stick figures, well, except for my large cock. I would’ve drawn that realistically and to scale.”

“Do I need to ask your partner if you’re exaggerating?”

“Not unless you don’t mind being jealous or depressed.”

“I’m sure I’ll survive. I’ve never had any complaints.” He held up a palm. “At least about the size of my dick. I can’t speak for the rest. I’m sure my ex-wife has a list of my faults longer than a CVS receipt.”

“So, what’s the plan for now?”

“Well, lucky for you, I already convinced the AUSA to let you remain undercover while you both get cleared by their office and PSP’s internal affairs. But you need to lay low. No dealing with the Demons, no task force business at all. Until I get the go-ahead, you two will do nothing but go to your assigned jobs at the DAMC businesses, since we need to stay on their good side, and come home. That’s it. It’s going to suck but you need to suck it up and wait it out.”

“We can do that.”

Crew arched an eyebrow. “Are you speaking for the both of you? Are you that far in your relationship?”

“Ask her when you go up. I’m sure she’ll agree.”

“Believe me, I plan on it. But, Fletch, if it turns out they want her pulled, she won’t have a choice. She won’t be able to stay here just because you two want to continue to bang on the DEA’s dime.”
