Mason stared at his brother-in-law. “What about your aunts? Do they feel the same way? I heard the rumor that it takes time to get your woman to fall in love with you.”
“Yes, unfortunately, that is the case. I don’t know why that happens, but it does.” Jacob sighed. “I do believe when it comes to my aunts, though, they have a similar feeling as the men. It’s a little different for them. Why?”
Mason looked past Jacob’s shoulder. “Because I believe that I’m Tamsin’s … man.” He didn’t know how else to describe who and what he was to Tamsin. “When I’m with her, and even when I’m not, I want to be near her. I think about her all the time, and all I want to do is make her happy, to give her a life she has always wanted. I want to devote my entire existence to making her smile.” He turned his attention back to Jacob. “I know you don’t like me. I know you’d rather see me dead than allow me anywhere near your sister, but I promise you, Jacob, I have only ever had Tamsin’s best interests at heart. I will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.”
“You love her,” Jacob said.
“I would die for her.” That was the truth, and Mason got to his feet. “I’m sorry for wasting your time today.”
Jacob held out his hand. Mason went to pull away but Jacob held onto his hand and they shook.
“No one was ever going to be good enough for my sister,” Jacob said. “It didn’t matter who my father agreed to, or even if Tamsin was to choose him. I saw her with you that night at the charity ball. The way she looked at you. You may not see it, but I know my sister does love you, and she is willing to do whatever it takes to be with you.”
He didn’t believe him. Mason didn’t know why he was saying those things, but he accepted it. It was time for him to take his leave, and he did so, climbing into the back of his car.
Time was running out.
If Albert didn’t get his niece, then all bets were off. He’d be able to fight an all-out war, but he also knew the Dentons would have to pick a side. After what his father had done, he had no doubt they would reach out to the Delcoties. If that happened, he didn’t know what it would mean for Tamsin and her brothers.
Everything was messing up and fast, and all because of his fucked-up father. He should have killed him when he had the chance.
Right now, it was feeling like there was no reprieve in what he was capable of. It was just one bad decision after another. He had to try and keep up, but it wasn’t easy.
Pulling out of Jacob Denton’s driveway, he drove across the city, heading back home to see his wife.
Tamsin Savonas.
The love of his life.
He had to do what he could to protect her, and killing his father was the only way.
Chapter Thirteen
Murdering Paul Savonas.
Killing him.
Ending his life.
All Tamsin could think about was if she could do it. Mason was behaving differently. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but she knew he was coming to a decision, and she had a horrible feeling it had to do with his father.
They were sitting in the garden, and she looked over at Mason to see him lost in thought. It had been a long time since she had seen him like this. David had left for the evening.
“Did you have a good day today?” Tamsin asked.
Mason lifted his head to look at her. “I went to see Jacob. Your brother.”
She put her glass of lemonade down. This was unexpected. “You did, how is he?” she asked.
“He’s good. I know he misses you.”
Tamsin licked her dry lips. “I miss him sometimes. I miss them all.” She had been thinking about what Landon said, as well as what David said. The story of his dad, and how he nearly died.
They had gotten time together, and David had treasured all the moments, but burying him years later still came with pain. Tamsin knew the life they led, there was always a chance she might have to bury one of her brothers. It wasn’t something she ever wanted to do.
For two years, she had been angry with them, and her rage had felt justified, but thinking about one of them passing didn’t make her feel anything but sad.
“You should accept their call, Tamsin. You need to make things right with Jacob and the others.”
“Mason, what is going on?” she asked.
“Nothing. I just…” He stopped and didn’t say another word.
“You haven’t found her, have you?” Tamsin asked.
“I have no idea where my father has taken her. Time is running out, Tamsin. The Delcoties will be within their rights to strike, and I know that if I was a Denton, I wouldn’t back us.”
