“Not as much as you do,” she says, trying to sound unaffected, but she can’t hide the lust in her voice.

I laugh, dropping my hand from between her legs. “You’re probably right about that.” I never cared much for eating pussy before Valen came along. If I could survive off her cum alone, I would. I pull her into my chest, wrapping my arms around her. Her hands rest on my waist and she tips her chin up to look at me. I hold her face in my hands, wishing I didn’t have to deal with this shit so I could hang out with her instead.

“Too bad our time has come to an end.”

That wipes the smile off my face.

“Classes start Monday,” she reminds me, keeping her face perfectly blank. Classes. And a new semester, which means I’ll officially be a full-time student and practicing with the team.

“And what if I don’t want it to end?”

Her mouth parts in surprise, but the door swings open, making both of us spring apart.

“Please don’t do anything stupid,” Shayne says, oblivious to the tension in the room.

Too late. I’m fucking your best friend and I’d rather saw off my shooting hand than stop.

“Me? Never.”

“Super reassuring.”

Valen

Holden didn’t come back last night after he dropped that bomb. I half-expected to wake up to being carried to his bed or find him in mine. I woke up feeling more disappointed than I’d like to admit, and even more so when I checked my phone and found nothing from him. Not a goodbye. Not even a dirty joke or a request for nudes.

Shayne and I stayed up way too late, watching movies, catching up, and making plans for today. We decided to drive over to the next town to do some shopping for our dorm and make a day of it. Between finals, the holidays, and break, it still looks like we just moved in. We’re three stores in, having picked out towels and décor for our bathroom, new sheets for me, and an actual table to eat at, when we decide to get lunch.

“I need sustenance,” she groans, swinging an oversized shopping bag into the back of her car.

“Where to?”

There are dozens of little restaurants within walking distance. “Flour?” I ask, spotting the restaurant that’s famous for its delicious sourdough bread bowls and soup.

“Hell yes.”

“So,” Shayne says, pushing her bowl of the soup to the side before leaning forward, resting her elbows on top of the table, her chin propped on her folded hands. I already know what’s coming from the tone of her voice and the look in her eye. “You hooked up with someone.”

“It was nothing serious.” I pinch off a piece of bread bowl before stuffing it into my mouth.

“That hickey looks pretty serious.” She flashes a bright smile, leaning forward even more, flicking her blonde hair behind her shoulder. “Did you at least get an orgasm out of the deal?”

I roll my eyes, pulling the collar of my crewneck sweatshirt up to cover said hickey. I’m going to kick Holden’s ass for that one. “One or two.” I shrug.

Her eyebrows shoot up, impressed.

“Or six?” Six in one day, but I leave that part out. I’ve lost count of how many times Holden’s made me come.

“Six!” she shouts with a smack to the tabletop before remembering our surroundings, glancing around at the heads that have turned in our direction. “Six?” she repeats, her voice a whisper this time.

Her phone lights up on the table, temporarily saving me from having to answer. “Last party of winter break,” she says, flashing the text from Christina, one of her volleyball friends.

“I heard about that one.” The cheer group chat has been talking about it all morning.

“Are we going?”

I feel like I’ve been cooped up since my injury, whether in the cabin or in the dorms. I’ve been in this sex-induced Holden haze and today’s the first time I’ve come up for air. It hasn’t stopped me from thinking about him, though. With every twinge of soreness between my legs, with each brush of my shirt against my raw nipples—I shake away my thoughts. The sooner I get back to the real world, the sooner I can stop thinking about Holden.

“I’m down if you are.”

“Dunkin on the way home?”

“Obviously.”

We both throw down a few bills for a tip before standing to leave. Shayne walks out first, holding the door open for me with her back. “Six orgasms also sound pretty serious, by the way.”

I glare at her.

“What? You said no one has ever been able to. Now you found someone you like enough to give you six?” She pauses to think. “Or do you like him because he gave you six of them? Honestly, either way is a win.”

“I don’t like him,” I say quickly before amending. “Not like that.” What was once the truth now feels like acid on my tongue. After spending these past few weeks together, I don’t know how I feel anymore. I definitely don’t dislike Holden. I was disappointed when we didn’t get to have a proper goodbye fuck last night. Then this morning, I woke up missing his warmth, his touch, his scent, and just…him.
