Dev registered how badly he’d fucked up but fought the hold, mainly due to his aversion to Cash ever touching him again.

He spotted the hookers at the street corner ahead. Before he could hatch a proper plan, his free hand reached for the door handle, shoving the door open. Cash grabbed his shirt sleeve, barely keeping him from leaving the car. “Give me the phone before you get out.”

Dev twisted and darted, pulling Cash’s upper body with his until the struggle became real. He busted a move. The same one he might have used had he realized he was being taken down inside Cash’s apartment last night. He executed the perfect karate chop, driving his hand into the back of Cash’s elbow. Either the tactical special agent was going to allow his arm to be broken or he’d let go.

“Goddamn it, Dev.” Cash let go.

He darted several feet from the car’s opening as the driver’s side door opened. They’d drawn all the attention from the women and one guy still standing on the corner.

“Hey, Devilman.” Since this was his corner, and he’d been with all of them at one time or another, he had no idea which one had chirped the words. They all drew Cash’s very focused attention.

The idea came together in a split second. One of the women started toward Dev with that come hither walk perfectly executed, but Dev shot a finger toward the guy lingering on the corner. His name was Ted, went by Rocket. He looked youngish in his barely there clothes and teasing attitude, but he was actually older than Dev.

Dev pushed the button to power off the cell phone before shoving it in his front pocket. He’d deal with the repercussions of his actions later, or never. Whatever. He glanced back at Cash then reached for his wallet, making a show of pulling it free so Cash could see he planned to pay for Rocket’s time. He used his own saunter as he started forward.

“What’s it gonna cost me, Rocket-man?”

The guy’s pretty pout perked up, becoming everything Dev needed him to be. The hooker pranced forward. He wore black assless chaps, a black cowboy hat, and heavily applied black eyeliner.

The perfect wardrobe to tease and tantalize. As if Rocket had called Dev before coming out tonight and asked him what to wear to help drive Cash mad.

“What’re we doin’ tonight, daddy?” Rocket asked. Dev opened his wallet, stretching it wide just in case Cash didn’t have twenty-twenty vision. “Is it both of you?”

Dev cast a quick glance over his shoulder, making sure Cash had stayed on that side of the vehicle. He was standing between the open car door and the driver’s side, staring at him and Rocket. Anger had pushed his brows down. That crease between them was formidable.

“Just me tonight, Rocket,” Dev said, turning back to the hooker. “He’s waitin’. I’ll fuck you fast.”

“With or without a rubber?” Rocket asked. Oh man, he wanted to laugh straight out loud at all these perfect questions.

“Pfft. Without, of course.” As if there were no other option. “You know me.”

“Two hundred dollars.”

Dev lowered his gaze to his wallet and shifted swiftly up in surprise. Their dual spontaneous showmanship came to a sudden end at the price point, especially for a hooker who worked a twenty-dollar corner. More like ten bucks for Dev. A fast fuck in broad daylight and an appreciative slap on the ass when done.

“Cash, I’m short twenty bucks. Can you spot me?” Dev asked, again glancing over his shoulder.

Cash only glared at him. The crease between his brows grew two times the size of the Grand Canyon.

“You’ll get the rest when I see you next time,” Dev said, taking out all his money, consisting of forty-seven dollars, most of that in single dollar bills—his cash tips from this morning. He tucked his wallet away, started for Rocket, handing the money over as he draped an arm around his shoulders. A small alcove in the building was right off the intersection.

“Want a third, Devilman?” Dollie, one of the women at the corner, called out. “I’ll come tickle that pretty ass for a fifty.” She was messing with him, clearly assessing the situation properly. Dollie wore a big blond wig and had big fake titties that she showed off about as much as Tena did. To prove his point, she flipped one out.

“Next time, Dollie,” he said, walking with all the brashness something like this required. More than anything, he wished he could see Cash’s reaction. But if he looked, he’d give his ruse away. Almost to the corner, Dev whispered against Rocket’s ear, hoping his litany of recording equipment didn’t pick up his words. “Casually look over your shoulder and look at the guy I came with. Tell me how he looks.”

“What?” Rocket said, looking up at him. The guy was cute as shit but lacking in the brains department.
