A fifty-fifty chance as to what the biker might do.

The car reversed then stopped, the driver’s side door opened. He could feel Dev’s frustration when he made it to the gate and saw it was actually locked closed. He had to go back to the car, cut the engine to get his keys.

Dev pushed the gate open then hopped back in the car and started forward again. He pulled to the back of the building and parked at an angle. His hood pointing in the direction of Cash’s driver’s side door.

Why?

The man fascinated him. What it might be like to be so free to be yourself. Dev wore his confidence well. Cash’s grin turned into a full smile when Dev looked back at the gate and flipped it off with both hands.

Dev started for the house with that swagger that spoke directly to Cash’s cock. A long gait and slightly bowed legs. The tall, muscular frame was currently wrapped in a leather bomber jacket. His dark blond hair was too long for the current cut, which made it its own sexy style.

He couldn’t see Dev’s face but knew that left brow stayed permanently lowered. The guy questioned everything, and it showed in his face. Cash tracked every one of Dev’s steps until he lost visual and faintly heard the back door close.

The mesmerized snare holding Cash to his spot at the window snapped free. He shook his head of whatever invisible tether seemed to connect his being to Dev’s. It made no sense.

He listened carefully to each thudded boot step coming up the staircase.

Cash took long, quiet strides toward his front door. He wished he could say he moved there for surveillance purposes only. His palms rested on the heavy wooden door, his eye going to the small peephole when the board underneath his foot creaked. He bit back his curse and held his breath. He had to remember the loose board was there.

Dev froze and turned toward Cash’s apartment, staring at the door.

Those full lips pursed. They were perfectly proportioned. Not too thin, and not too full. The way the tattoos on his neck edged his face and jaw outlined his natural beauty. If the sides of Dev’s hair were shaved, he bet the tattoos went past the hairline.

Something secretive inside Cash wanted to believe Dev knew he was there, watching.

Dev turned back to his apartment and went inside without another glance in his direction. The door slammed shut hard, the subtle ricochet vibrating through his fingers where they rested against his own door.

Cash eased away, staring at the dark wood. He crossed his arms over his chest. The only real word bouncing around inside his head was…shit.

He pivoted on his heels and started back to the bedroom. He was obviously losing his mind.

Chapter 9

“Your old man wants to see you,” Millie spoke directly against his ear. She had a signature move when he was working on a client, where she came in slow, making sure he knew she was there before leaning down to talk loud enough for his ears only. The controlled breath she used didn’t send a shiver spasming down his body. The chick always had his back.

This time, her tone was clear that she didn’t like interrupting him while he worked. Especially over anything to do with his old man.

He agreed.

“What’s he want?” Dev asked quietly. He never stopped the movement of his pen.

“Not sure. He’s not happy, but he never is. He wants to see you in the next fifteen minutes. He stressed the fifteen-minute part.”

Dev’s jaw set. The raging alpha male inside him had grown way past tired of being dominated.

The reality of the situation pissed Dev off. If his old man didn’t get his way, this guy in his chair and the chick in the waiting room were going to hear an angry showdown.

Dev thought out his schedule. It wasn’t the worst possible time to take a quick break. The perfectionist inside him was in fine-tuning mode, and he probably needed to call it done for the day on this part of the design. It still took several long moments for him to lift his foot off the pedal and shift gears.

“Millie’s gonna take care of the cleanup for me. She’ll do a better job anyway. We’ll continue after this heals. It’s a badass design.”

They were in the process of creating a sleeve. One that held personal meaning to the client. The dude nodded his approval.

Millie popped her disposable black nitrile gloves in place and immediately took his seat. “It’s an impressive design,” she said happily, in her comfort place of proper hygienic care.

“I think it looks real good,” his customer agreed.

The simple approval was music to Dev’s ears.

“Right,” he nodded, tossing his gloves in the trash. “We’ll keep goin’ after the holidays.”
