‘Who is your type these days?’
‘That sounds like a personal question to me.’
‘Are we gonna keep a tally on personal questions?’
‘Just trying to be fair.’
‘You’ll get your turn.’ He leaned a little closer to keep the conversation private and said in a lower voice, ‘If I’m not your type, who is? I have an idea of what you want from the other night, but physically? I’ve heard some women say I’m everybody’s type before.’
I chuckled and somehow managed to lean closer. ‘That sounded a little cocky, don’t you think?’
I watched as his eyes dropped to my lips for a quick second, then he was smiling back at me. ‘You did have a crush on me at one time. Which should prove my point.’
I leaned back a little, feeling happy that there was no awkwardness left between us. At least not in that moment. ‘I’d go easy there. The key phrase being: at one time. And my crush these days is Chris Evans. I will never get over him like I got over you.’
He frowned. ‘I look nothing like him.’
I laughed. ‘There you go. Which is why I’m not going for you.’
He shook his head. ‘When we were last out together, we were talking about dates, I think,’ he continued.
I grinned. ‘I’m hopeless when it comes to dates.’
‘Why?’
I shrugged. ‘I genuinely have no idea. The long-distance one…’
‘What was his name?’
‘Craig. He did a number on me, so my self-confidence isn’t what it should be.’ It wasn’t what it should be thanks to my family in the first place, but that was a whole other conversation that I wasn’t willing to share with him.
‘If things weren’t going great with him why didn’t you break up with him?’
‘To be completely honest, I think I was just afraid to lose someone else. Plus, it’s really hard to find someone decent online. You have to have really good luck. And that’s not me. I had one experience with an online date and that was quite enough.’
‘And you need good luck with blind dates.’
I nodded, reaching for my beer. ‘And those. The blind date from the other night was more so Gayle would stop badgering me about it. She set me up on two other dates in the last year. None of them worked out.’
‘Yeah? And the guy from the other night – what was his name?’
‘Ralph.’
‘I don’t think I like it.’
‘His name?’
I watched as he sipped from his beer. ‘Yeah.’
‘Well. Okay. When I saw his photo I liked his smile. I really like a good smile.’
His eyes dropped to my mouth again, then he looked away. ‘I can’t argue with that.’
William’s own lips curled up and, lo and behold, Ralph had nothing on him. ‘What if the dates turn into something serious? Will you postpone the move or not even move at all?’
‘With my botched dating experiment? Or with Ralph?’
‘Any of the future dates, I guess. I thought Ralph would be over since he stood you up. He still in the running?’
‘Apparently he had an emergency that night, and he does want to meet with me again. He didn’t have my phone number, and couldn’t reach Gayle so she could call me.’ I sipped my beer and noticed it was almost done, and so was his.
William angled his head and gave me a long look.
‘What?’ I asked, feeling trapped under his gaze.
‘Do we believe him?’
I laughed. ‘Don’t know about you, but I do, I guess. And about the move… I’m moving. I won’t let another guy control my life again. I waited for Craig for so long, I’m not gonna do that again. I come first.’
William opened his mouth, but Lola cut into our conversation. ‘Another round?’
We both looked up at our waitress, almost surprised to see her there.
William glanced at me. ‘One more?’
I checked my watch and realized I was enjoying just chatting.
‘Okay. I can do another fifteen minutes.’
Lola nodded and left us.
‘Why are you dating if it’s not gonna go anywhere? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the whole idea of dating was to get to know someone to see if they were a good match for you.’
Playing with my glass, I avoided William’s gaze. ‘That is usually the idea, but I’m not interested in something serious. At least not now that I decided on the move.’ I peered up and he was still looking at me expectantly. To tell or not. I sighed and looked behind him to see if anyone was focusing on us. They were not. It didn’t even look like we were a part of their group. I crooked my finger between us so he’d come closer. And that’s when I realized the beer was getting to me.
A smile dancing on his lips, he leaned towards me, and I leaned close to his ear. To anyone around us it would look like we were lost in our own bubble, but that wasn’t the case. I was just trying to make sure none of our colleagues would hear us. Especially Rick, because he was one of the worse gossips at the firm. It wasn’t because I secretly enjoyed being this close to him or anything like that.
