Two children, both of whom are totally gorgeous, who barely give us any trouble at all. A home that is now even more full of life than it ever has been.

I have everything I’ve ever wanted in my life. I raise my eyes up to the framed photograph of my parents when they were still alive that we mounted over the dining table – right next to a matching one of Jenna’s parents.

Sometimes, I feel like they must be watching over me. How else could my life have transformed into such an amazing thing within just a couple of years?

Jenna bends over to get out some bowls from the cupboard, and I can’t help myself – I wolf whistle. Billy gives me a confused look, but I just laugh. Maybe it’s a little too early to explain to him that daddy loves mommy’s ass.

“You admiring something?” Jenna asks as she straightens up.

“Just the, ah, plant outside,” I say, winking at her so she understands the code. “I was just thinking. It looks like it’s been growing really nicely lately. I’m sure it’s bigger. Rounder.”

“Daddy, that plant is spiky, not round,” Billy frowns.

“Oh, is it? Silly daddy,” I say, grinning at Jenna at the joke that only we understand.

“It’s bigger and rounder, is it?” she repeats under her breath. “Well, maybe daddy’s not so silly. Maybe there’s a reason that it’s bigger and rounder.”

“The fact that you got really amazing at cooking?” I suggest. “I’m pretty sure mine is bigger and rounder, too.”

“No, not that,” Jenna says. A timer on the oven dings, and she walks over to it. “Ah – just in time.”

“What’s that?” I ask. I figured dinner was on the stove – I didn’t realize there was more in the oven.

She pulls out a tray and turns around, showing it to me, her hands swathed in oven gloves. “What do you think it is?”

“It’s bread,” I say.

“What kind of bread?”

I frown. “I don’t know. Maybe white?”

“No, look at the shape and size,” Jenna prompts.

Then I get it, and I almost want to facepalm myself so hard.

I’m supposed to be a detective. The rounder ass. The fact she was feeling sick the last couple of mornings and didn’t want to eat much for breakfast. And finally, I should have gotten this pun right away.

“That’s a bun,” I say breathlessly. “You’ve got a bun in the oven.”

“That’s right,” she says and looks at Frankie. “How would you like a little brother or sister?”

Frankie frowns hard, concentrating on the question.

“No!” Billy supplies for her, putting his hands to his head and making both of us laugh until we have to sit down and catch our breath.
