“I know you will. Good night, Angel Henderson. I’ve gotta fly to New York early tomorrow, but when I get back, I’ll pick you up Friday at 7:30, right here. I’m never late, but I’ll wait for you.”

One more dark, thunderous kiss and he turned and walked to his car.

As I watched his incredible form from the back, admiring the view I couldn’t help wondering what Wonderland I’d wandered into.

That was nine months ago and I already knew then, we knew we would be together forever.

2

It was the first time I had lived with a guy, and I was so excited for Adam and me to have a place together. And what a place it was. I moved just two weeks after that first date because Adam packed up my apartment while I was at work one day and moved me in. I should have been pissed but being with him from that first night at dinner just felt like my forever was starting and I was so happy to make a home with him.

The house was a neo-classical Tudor with high ceilings and beams and warm neutral tones. Adam had a decorator buy everything for him, so although it was tasteful, it lacked personality and soul.

Sure, it was Adam’s house, but as soon as I moved in, I started re-painting and getting new furniture. He gave me a black Amex card for anything I needed and told me not to worry about money ever again. I admit, I spent so much time trying to make the house look like I wanted, I probably neglected Adam a bit.

But, I needed him to help me move stuff around, pick out paint colors and help keep the place nice. It became an obsession. Between working and studying, making our place perfect was, yeah, my new baby which didn’t leave much time for Adam.

One thing that I kept nagging him about was that he didn’t spend enough time helping me keep the place clean even though it was pretty spotless most of the time. But, it was little things that pushed me into irrational rage mode. I mean, who puts one dirty plate into an empty clean sink? Honestly, I needed to train this boy up a bit and I got to work on that right away.

But, after a month of moving in, he started getting quieter. The impromptu fucking didn’t happen as often, and the general vibe softened between us.

There was a shift in the energy, and I was scared Adam and I were on the road to the end.

I came home from having that coffee with Larissa determined to figure out what was going on. But I knew if I could get us naked and fucking first, I would have a much better shot at getting the hulking man that stole my heart to talk to me.

“Hey.” Adam gave me a nod from his desk as I peeked my head into his home office, so happy to see him home because he’d been spending tons of time at the office and I was feeling neglected too.

“Hey. Whatcha doin’?” I asked, the afternoon sun gleaming in the bank of windows behind him.

“Work. This IPO is kicking my ass. I’ve got Larry calling to tell me the motherfucking sky is falling every fucking minute and Delvin on the other line crunching numbers and screaming about liability and share/dividend structure. I’d like to fucking knock their heads together. I have exactly two hours to get this spreadsheet over to the securities officer or our IPO is going to be delayed and a whole shit ton of folks are gonna lose out on some big fucking money. I came home to work for some peace.” His eyes were stuck to the computer screen, and I felt my plan slipping through my fingers.

I admit, I‘m a bit of a baby when things don’t go my way. My own dad was useless at best, and although I try not to act like a princess bitch, sometimes it boils up inside me and I overflow like an ungrateful toddler.

Looking at Adam’s carved features, his brow drawn together and his fingers frantically typing, I knew it wasn’t the right time. But that neglected little girl inside me had to have her way. His phone was dinging with text messages and the tension in the set of his jaw and the constant tapping of his foot made it clear I should leave him alone or make him some tea and then leave him alone.

Instead, I pushed. “Adam. Take a break, okay? Why don’t you come upstairs for a little bit…” I tipped my head to the side and traced my fingers down the rough stubble on his cheek.

“Baby, I need to take care of some shit here.” He glanced my way, then back at the screen.
