“What happened to him?”

“The woman he was having an affair with drugged him and put him in bed with two minors. Of course, there were pictures taken, and they had control of his life from then on.”

“He’s one of the lucky ones. He came clean to his wife because the whole thing made him sick. He wasn’t thinking about being exposed but about the young girls they had used in their plot. That’s why Dad believed him. He said every time the guy mentioned those girls, he threw up. That, and the fact he knew the guy was telling the truth.”

“How did he find Dad?”

“He didn’t; Dad found him. Come here.” He lifted his arm, and I left my seat and climbed into his lap, needing comfort. I didn’t even realize I was shaking until he wrapped his arms around me.

We sat in silence for a while as I let my mind go where it would. I couldn’t get the image of those kids dressed up to look years older than they actually were out of my head or the sick things that were happening in those rooms upstairs.

“Mark, as soon as I give birth, I want back in.”

“We’ll see! You’ll get your chance to meet your new friends in a few months.”

“Oh?”

“Yes, our whole family has been invited to the new head’s daughter’s wedding. I believe you’ve spoken to one of his kids already.”

“So, she really is a kid.” He just nodded his head.

“Yes, a very powerful one at that.”

LYON

“Catalina!”

“Yes, Daddy!” I watched her lick her ice cream out the side of my eye. Murdering fuck!

“I thought you said no killing.”

“I didn’t kill anyone, Daddy; I wasn’t even there.”

“But you put it in her head.” She shrugged her shoulders and twisted her head to get the bit of ice cream that dripped onto her hand.

“Ooh, Daddy, who won though? I think I won this one again. Your guy didn’t do much.” I rolled my eyes and took a bite of my cone while looking out at the ocean. One of these days, I’m going to walk into that shit and not come back. Hopefully, that day would come before this one incinerates every shit in her path.

“You did good.”

“Thanks, Daddy. It was fun.” Only Mengele would think it’s fun to mess with people’s minds. I was a bit skeptical about letting her test her chops on a job this big, but I should’ve known better than to doubt. She’s fucking pro.

The mind control thing isn’t something I prefer, but in this case, it came in handy. Besides, I needed to see how advanced she was at this age, which I sometimes regret. She makes everything look like a stroll on the beach.

I know she knows it’s not a game, but it still bothers me that she knows anything about this hell at all. I’d left Wallis to her after my squad raided the party and took him. The fallout from that night is still reverberating around the world and will be for a long time to come.

No one had escaped that night. Masters and Summers, along with Mancini’s wife, had coordinated with the bureau and the task force in their divisions to round up what was left after we took Wallis out of there.

Mengele was now streaming the killing with the story of what went down that night running in the background, and the outcry was as loud as you could imagine. She didn’t let the reporter get shit; she’d exposed the governor along with some of the other dignitaries who had been in attendance that night to the rest of the world.

The only ones who had been protected from exposure were the children who were being abused, who were now at Thorpe’s complex being treated before they could be reunited with their loved ones. Politicians, entertainers, businessmen, and women had been caught in her trap.

And it was hers, from beginning to end. She’d come up with the idea and executed it from beginning to end. Now, it was over. It had been over for a few days, and we were finally able to catch our breath.

She had Wallis back there somewhere, torturing information out of him with her shit. It must be hell for him, being at the mercy of three little girls that he couldn’t control or harm in any way.

I brought her out here after the others went to bed because her murderous aura was still strong, and she needed to be a kid, at least for a little while.

“Daddy!”

“Mengele, if you’re about to ask me about going to see that fu… that damn rat again, don’t. I’m not going.” She turned her back and pouted. Pain in the ass, just like her mother.
