“The power is yours to open or close the door between us. Let me show you where it is in case of an emergency.”

That made sense. Now that she knew there were dragons, Aurora wondered what else was out there she didn’t know about. “I have a door in my mind?”

“That’s the easiest way to imagine and control it. Close your eyes. Both of them,” he added sternly when she tried to squint one partially open to watch him.

When she’d followed his instructions, Drake placed his hand on her forehead. Immediately, her eyes flashed back open. His eyebrow rose and she squeezed her eyes closed again.

“Keep your eyes closed, Little one. You are concentrating now on the front of your mind just under my hand. I want you to imagine turning around to face the rest of your brain.”

It took a few seconds to pull her thoughts together. Turning took a lot of energy and it was frightening to see the darkness in front of her. Aurora felt herself shaking. “I don’t like this.”

“I’m right here with you and if it gets too overwhelming you can open your eyes. Before you do that, look closely, Little one. It’s not black. Can you see the small zings of light?”

“No. I don’t see them.”

“Concentrate. There’s a blue one. Now, pink.”

A shimmer caught her attention. “I saw something neon green.”

“That’s it. That’s fun, isn’t it? Those are your thoughts. Watch what happens if I say, ‘You crave making love to your Dragon Daddy.’”

“Wow! Like four colors zipped toward me. That was fun.”

“Good job, Aurora. You please me.”

A gold light appeared in front of her. “I can see one the color of your scales! It’s beautiful.”

“That’s the light that leads you to me. Follow it. Keep thinking about me.”

It took so much concentration to move that she almost lost the light. His hand shifted a smidge and an image of Drake’s handsome face popped into her mind. That light flared hot again. Juggling her thoughts to move and picture Drake, Aurora moved slowly. Finally, she turned a corner and found a large steel door. It was triple protected with deadbolts.

“What do you see, Aurora?”

“I’m at the door. It’s like a vault with a metal barrier. There are three locks. Two have large brass keys in them. The first one is open. I don’t see that key anywhere.”

“That empty slot is our connection. I felt the lock open and the key disappear the moment I touched you.”

“Really?”

“You felt it, too, but didn’t know what it meant. Put your hand in front of the empty keyhole. What do you feel?”

“It’s like a stream flowing both ways. That’s our link?”

“Yes, Little one. There are other doors in your mind. It is important not to mess with the other doors. You do not wish to allow others access to your mind. Do you remember what color brought you here?”

“Gold.”

“Of course. The door is dusty. Reach out a hand and draw something on the door that only you and I would know. Tell me when you’re done.”

Not moving easily, she chose something easy that also made her smile.

“Done?”

Aurora nodded without opening her eyes and gasped, putting her hands out to steady herself blindly against the couch when everything sloshed around. “That wasn’t smart.”

“Now, open the second lock, Aurora.”

She imagined herself extending one hand and turning the key. The lock was hard. Stiff. Like she was opening a door that had been locked for years. Straining, she was able to get it to wiggle and finally, it slowly turned. When she pulled it out, Aurora felt a rush of sensations wrap around her as the key vanished from her hold. Instantly, her eyes flashed open, and she launched herself into Drake’s arms.

Hugging her so close she couldn’t feel where she ended and he began, Drake held her as if he’d never let her go. He pressed kisses to her shoulder. “You’re okay, Aurora. I promise. Remember how you did that. If you are ever in danger, center yourself. Find the door. Open the last key. That will connect our minds fully and I will know where you are.”

“Opening that second one was so intense. I don’t know if I can handle more.”

“In an emergency, unseal the door completely. The locks on the door represent barriers between our minds. When the third is open, the door will cease to divide our thoughts.”

“Can I reclose it later?” she asked cautiously.

“Yes, Little one. Only the third lock can be reclosed once it’s open. The others will remain open from now on and can never be resealed. The third is different—special. It can be opened according to your need and desire.”

“Why are they different?” she asked, confused.

“The first two are our bond. The first opens when we meet. It signals me that you are my mate. What did you feel when we met?”
