But that piece gets smaller with every passing day. That piece gets smaller as I let myself embrace the joy and the life Grace and I are building together. One day, I hope I’ll get to a place where I feel like I deserve all the happiness I feel every day and hope the piece of me that says otherwise will disappear entirely. Until it does, I’m going to hold on to what we have with both hands. I’m going to hold on to it for all I’m worth, and I will not let it go without a fight.
“What are you thinking about?” Grace asks.
“You. Our life.”
Her full, red lips curl into a smile. “What about me and our life?”
“I was just thinking that I’m the luckiest man alive.”
She leans forward and plants a gentle kiss on my lips then pulls back and looks me in the eye for a long moment.
“You’re darn right you are,” she says.
“Don’t I know it,” I reply. “I love you, Grace.”
“And I love you, baby.”
As the lights in the arena dim and Tyson’s walk-out music starts to play, the crowd erupts as the anticipation builds. I take Grace’s hand in mine and give her a smile. I can’t say how or why I got so lucky, but I don’t care. I did. And I’m going to simply be grateful for it every single day for the rest of a life with Grace I hope is very, very long.
