I tried to get to know her, but we just couldn’t connect.
Right after I dropped her off at home and started heading back to the house, my phone rang. I glanced at the screen, seeing that it was Brianna. Ever since she got hitched to a military man right after she graduated high school, I hadn’t seen that much of her, but she seemed happy. I supposed that was all that I could hope for as a brother to someone as headstrong as Brianna.
I answered and put the call on speaker.
“Hey,” I answered.
“Hey! You busy?” Brianna asked.
“Nope, just heading home,” I replied, tapping my steering wheel. I hadn’t told her about Delilah coming into town yet. It had been such a quick decision, and I hadn’t talked to my sister in a few weeks because she was so busy doing her work as a professional translator.
“Well, I got some good news for you. I’m coming by to visit at the end of the week!” Brianna announced.
Now, I really had to tell her.
“That’s great, Bri. I’m really excited to see you,” I told her with a sincere tone. She was gone so much, and we had grown up so close together. Along with Delilah. “I actually have some news of myself.”
“What’s that? Did you propose or something? It’s getting to be that time,” Brianna guessed.
I grimaced. It ached a little because of guilt, but I just couldn’t see myself proposing to Kerrie. At least not for a long time.
“No, Delilah is back in town,” I replied.
Brianna gasped.
“Seriously? She’s back? Will she be there when I get there?” she asked.
“Yeah, she will be. We’re actually recording a song together. Her and the band,” I said.
“Oh my gosh! That’s going to sound amazing!” Brianna exclaimed.
The corner of my mouth turned up slightly. It would sound amazing. We already had some really great ideas that I couldn’t wait to flesh out, and Delilah brought a lot to the table. The guys got along with her well too.
“Yeah, it’s going to be great. I’ll let you listen when we get a base down,” I promised her. She had always been supportive of my music. Delilah’s too.
“So, how’s that been? With her being back?” Brianna asked.
I narrowed my eyes suspiciously. She had a certain tone to her voice.
“What do you mean?” I replied.
“It’s just been a while since you two last saw each other. You were so close… and then you stopped talking to each other,” Brianna told me.
In the past, Brianna pushed me a lot to tell her why I randomly got in my car and traveled around the region for two weeks, avoiding home. I didn’t tell her that I had fallen for her best friend, and I suspected that Delilah hadn’t told her about what happened either since she hadn’t ever said anything about it. I merely said I needed to get out and think about my future.
Part of that was true.
“It’s been fine. It’s fun working together on music,” I told her, keeping my answer as vague as possible.
I didn’t want to tell her that I had more of a spark with Delilah than my own girlfriend. That I was questioning my relationship. That I was nervous about my feelings from the past taking hold of me in the present.
“Oh, I bet,” Brianna commented, her voice bouncing slightly from laughter.
“Are you going to act like this when you land?” I asked her as my jaw tensed. Even if she was the older sibling, she could act like the younger one.
“Aw, am I embarrassing you?” Brianna let out her laughter.
Unfortunately, that was her job as the older sibling. She picked on me like it was as routine as breathing.
“It would really suck if no one picked you up from the airport and left you stranded out there,” I said with an evident sneer to my voice.
“Pfft. I’m calling an Uber so that I can surprise Delilah. Nice try, though,” Brianna quipped in a triumphant manner.
I ground my teeth as I listened to my threat fall flat. Oh, well. I needed to save my strength and my breath for when she actually arrived here.
“Yeah, yeah. Text me when you land. Be careful,” I told her.
“Sure thing. Bye!” Brianna said in a sing-song voice.
I hung up and sighed, peering ahead at the quiet road that wound through town toward the ranch. It was hard enough acting like things were normal between me and Delilah in front of the band. It would be even harder with my amazing but nosy sister around.
Maybe there was no point in hiding things from her. She was the one person I felt like I could talk to right now, and it was driving me crazy listening to my own conflicted thoughts over and over again. If anyone could help me figure out what to do, it was her.
