“Oh, Sjelevenn,” I murmur, kissing her forehead, before using my thumbs to wipe her tears off. “You aren’t your parents. I won’t presume to know what you went through or how you feel, all I can tell you is how I feel. I am fucking crazy about you, Summer. You make me forget everything that doesn’t pertain to you. Before I met you I was a strait-laced retired Army Captain, politician, who just broke into your house and fucked you on a bathroom counter. I knew you were meant to be mine the moment I saw you. Sjelevenn. You spoke to my soul. Do you feel this between us?”

“Feel what?” she asks, her tiny fingers splayed on my chest possessively. I fucking love it.

“This pull. This undeniable fission of energy between us. It’s what makes me hard for you and you so fucking wet for me. Tell me you feel it,” I demand, my cock pressing into her belly. I’ll never get my fill of her. Never.

“I… feel it, Balder,” she admits, and my lips are on hers so fast. Then she’s under me and I’m inside of her, her legs wrapped around my waist.

“Don’t run from me again, Summer.”

“Why?” she asks, moaning.

“Because. I. Will. Always. Find. You. Always,” I say through gritted teeth, each word punctuated by a hard thrust of my cock inside of her. “Tell me you understand.” I pull out of her and tease her opening with my cock, not giving her what she wants until she answers me.

“Why are you torturing me, Balder?”

“Because you are torturing me,” I say honestly.

She reaches her hands up to my face, gripping my cheeks. I look down at her and see more tears in her eyes. I’m going to do whatever it takes to make her believe in love, believe in us.

“I understand,” she says but for some reason, I don’t believe her as I slam back into her. Her moan goes all through me and I know I’ll never last. She’s too perfect. Perfect for me.

“Rest. I’ll wake you up before we have to go to dinner,” I say, gathering her to me again.

“Mmmkay,” she whispers, her face buried in my chest. The rightness of this moment isn’t lost on me. I want this all the time. So much so that I’ve already contacted my cousin in Minnesota, Torran about getting a ring from our elite family collection. He’s overnighting one that belonged to my many greats ago grandmother, Brynhild. The ring has somehow managed to survive almost a thousand years. Brides in this family gift the ring back to the collection for future Jorgensen brides to wear. There has never been an unhappy marriage among us going all the way back to Gunner and Brynhild, even the arranged ones.

That’s why I know Summer will run and I’ll catch her until the day I die.

CHAPTER 11

SUMMER

“Can you hand me the steaks, dear?” To my right, Balder’s mother has all of the platters set up and ready to be served on the patio. When we got to his parent's house for dinner, I asked him if it is always so grand, but he explained that his cousins, Loki and Hank, are in town with their wives, looking for new locations to build a restaurant. Also in attendance are his brothers, Heimdall and his wife, Marina, and his single brother, Ødger. They were at the charity event, but I missed them. In fact, it was Ødger’s charity that was being touted.

“Of course.” I hand her the platter and turn to the sound of chatter.

“I can’t get over how beautiful it is here,” one of the cousin’s wives, Cadi, says, taking off her jacket.

“I know. It looks so clean,” The other one, named Tabby, says. “Can we help with anything?”

“Sure. You ladies can grab the bread platter and the salad and take it outside. Summer, darling, go get my son and tell him it is time to eat.” Nodding, I walk out of the room, taking a deep breath when I am alone. I use a second to close my eyes and remind myself I am not in school. These women are nice, and I don’t need to feel inadequate. Yeah okay.

“Summer, right?” Marina, his brother Heimdall’s wife, stands in front of me. My instinct is to turn and go the other way, but I stand there, hands shaking at my side, and try not to be a freak.

“Y-yes.” I feel like I am in an inferno right now. I swear my eyebrows are sweating. I know for sure my upper lip is wet.

“I don’t know why we haven’t met before this, but we should really get together.” It sounds nice, but right now, everything around me is spinning.

“Baby, it's ok.” His barely whispered words have an almost immediate impact like last time. When did he come up beside me? If I weren’t trying to calm my stuttering heart, I would marvel at its effect on me. Instead, I turn in his arms and rest my forehead on his chest. “Talk to me,” he says, lifting my chin.
