Half of me loves that she’s already in planning mode, the other half would like her to look at this as less of an obligation and a job. But getting a day in with her is the important part. The only way I can prove my feelings are real is to show her. And I can’t do that if we’re not spending time together—fingerbangs and face sitting aside. “How about Saturday? Would that work for you?”

“Let me check my calendar.” She types away on her computer for a few seconds, a crease between her eyes. I want to run my index finger over the spot to smooth it out. “Saturday is free. I planned to run errands, but I can do most of it on Sunday.”

“Awesome. I’ll pick you up at eleven?” That gives me a couple of days to get everything organized. I’ll make the most of this day together, and not because Brooklyn’s mom needs photographic evidence of our relationship.

“I can just meet you wherever.” She crosses her arms, as if she’s daring me to challenge her independence.

“It makes a lot more sense for me to pick you up. Especially since we live three blocks apart.”

She taps at her lips with a blue painted nail. Lips I’ve had on mine recently. I wish I could stop thinking about kissing her for five seconds.

Another deep sigh. “I guess you have a point.”

“Awesome. I promise I’ll make it fun.”

“If you say so. I have a call in ten minutes, so unless there’s anything else…” She lets the sentence hang.

“Nope. I got what I came for. Looking forward to our date.” I give her a thumbs-up and grin as she levels me with the evilest of evil eyes. “Have a great rest of your day, Wills.” I exit her office backwards, in case she decides to lob something at my head as I leave.

“I hope you step on LEGO while barefoot,” she calls to my retreating form.

I smile as I whistle my way down the hall. I have a date with Wills. Now I just need to make sure it’s the best she’s ever been on.

CHAPTER 22

DALLAS

Amessage from Wills is followed by several photos of various wrapped boxes.

Wills

What is this?

Dallas

Gift boxes.

Wills

Why are they here?

Dallas

They’re for you, obviously.

Wills

Why are you buying me things?

Dallas

Because you’re my fiancée, and I’m taking you on a date, and I love shopping.

Wills

I’m not sure if you’ve hit your head recently, but I am your FAKE fiancée, and this is a FAKE date.

Dallas

You should delete that message. That’s not something you want anybody else to see. If you don’t want them, I can take them back.

The humping dots appear, disappear, then appear again.

Dallas

Seriously. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, so if they really bother you, I will take them back.

Wills

You don’t have to do that. But how do you know my size in EVERYTHING?

Dallas

Wills

That only accounts for my panties.

Dallas

I went through your closet when I was at your place for dinner with the family.

Wills

You did not.

Dallas

You’re right. I didn’t. I’m very good at guessing. If this hockey career doesn’t pan out, I figure I can move to carnivals.

Wills

But the clowns, Dallas.

Dallas

Good point. Better not fuck up this career then.

Wills

Aren’t you glad I’m here to keep you out of trouble?

Dallas

Immensely grateful. I’m happy to show you how grateful with any body part you’d like.

Wills

Thank you for the clothes.

Obviously, she’s ignoring my offer. Hopefully she’ll let me come up to her place at the end of our date so I can get another hit.

Dallas

Entirely my pleasure.

CHAPTER 23

DALLAS

Isleep like shit the night before our date, worried I’ll do something to fuck the whole thing up. Then I accidentally hit snooze and sleep through my alarm, which means I’m running late.

Wills

It’s after eleven. Where the hell are you?

Dallas

On my way!

When I finally arrive, Wills looks more than a little annoyed as she exits the building. I want to get out and help, but she’s already at the passenger side door, and I didn’t have time to manage my anxiety boner, so all I can do is lean over and pull the handle. We’re not off to a good start.

Aside from the murderous look on her perfect face, I notice she’s wearing one of the outfits I bought for her.

She opens the back door. “You’re twenty-five minutes late.” She tosses her bag in the back seat and hangs the garment bag, closing the door with a little extra force before she slides into the passenger seat. “It’s common courtesy to text if you’re going to be late.”

“I had trouble falling asleep, and then I slept through my alarm, and I forgot my suit and had to run back up and get it. I’m sorry I kept you waiting.” As soon as she’s buckled in, I put the car in gear and pull into traffic. I wait until the locks click before I say anything else. “I would have gotten out of the car to help with your bags, but I’m currently owning another inconvenient boner. I felt as though a public hard-on would make things worse—”
