From where she leaned against the wall, Sharon snickered, and he shot her a glare.
“It’s none of my business and I shouldn’t have mentioned it,” Winter said in a cool voice.
That first part might be true, but her perception of him had dropped even lower, and he wanted a fucking do-over for this day.
“Is everything okay?” He wouldn’t say, with the baby, and give Sharon any ammunition over him. “What’s going on?”
“Everything is fine, and it wasn’t anything important,” Winter said. “I should go.”
Dammit. She’d called and now he’d lost her.
His ex was smirking as she gathered her purse from where she’d left it on the table. Sharon’s grin told him she’d gotten her revenge for him turning down her advances and refusing to consider her for the part.
“Winter, I’ll get back to you when I’m in the car on the way to the airport,” he promised.
“You don’t have to. I’m fine,” she said and disconnected the call.
Sharon paused, her hand on the doorknob. “She was pretty. Too bad you blew it.” She flung open the door and stalked out of the room.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” He ran his hand over his face before grabbing his phone.
The car was outside waiting to take him to the airport, where he could get on the jet and spend six hours figuring out how to make things right with Winter.
Chapter Five
Winter sat in the waiting room of the obstetrician’s office. She’d called all over the city to try and get into a doctor quickly, wanting to confirm the home tests and learn what she needed to do to keep herself healthy. Every office she called was booked out, so Nikki had asked Jade and Aurora, who were both pregnant, to use their pull and make a call to try to get Winter in to see their doctor sooner. Apparently being a Kingston and a Dare had serious pull because two days later, Winter was here with Nikki by her side.
Her sister tapped her foot on the carpeted floor and glanced around. Winter followed her gaze, taking in the chairs filled with pregnant women, many with their uncomfortable-looking significant others.
“You still haven’t told me why I’m here and not Harrison. I thought we’d talked things through, and you agreed he should have the chance to be with you.”
Winter shrugged. “Let’s just say I decided not to ask him.” He’d texted while he was gone to check on her and because she appreciated the effort, she’d worked up the courage to FaceTime and invite him to join her today. She cringed at the reminder of the reason she’d brought her sister along instead.
Nikki narrowed her gaze. “What happened?”
“What makes you think something happened? Couldn’t I have just changed my mind?”
She sighed. “Just tell me so I can sic Asher on him.” A smirk lifted her lips.
Winter laughed. “You’ll do no such thing.” But she might as well tell Nikki the truth. “When I called Harrison to video chat, a woman answered his phone, and when I finally saw his face, he had lipstick on his cheek.”
Nikki’s eyes opened wide.
“He said it wasn’t what it looked like, but come on. How trite is that?” Winter shrugged. “Anyway, it doesn’t matter.”
The fact was, while she’d been home worrying about his reaction to their baby and debating on how much to let him share, he’d been in LA, thoughts of her forgotten while he was busy doing some woman during auditions.
“It doesn’t matter,” Winter muttered.
But jealousy burned through her at the memory, and she shook off the useless emotion. She didn’t want to feel that way about him. Harrison had been the perfect man for her because they were in agreement. Neither wanted a serious relationship, and that hadn’t changed.
“Look, I know I have no hold on him, and he didn’t do anything wrong, but seeing him in action made me realize Harrison didn’t ask for this.” She lay her hand over her belly.
Winter was just his obligation, as he’d said.
“Harrison didn’t want this baby.” And he didn’t want her. “So I wasn’t about to make a fool of myself by asking him to come to the appointment.”
Nikki narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips, silent, obviously lost in thought.
“What is it?” Winter asked.
“Harrison said it wasn’t what it looked like?”
Winter nodded.
“Well, I believe him.” Nikki placed a hand on Winter’s arm. “Listen, he’s changed from his younger days. Asher told me he doesn’t bed hop like he did when he first arrived in LA, so there’s only one explanation for what you saw.”
“Which is?” Winter asked skeptically.
“It wasn’t what it looked like.”
Before she could respond, her name was called, and she turned to see a nurse standing in the doorway to the exam rooms.
“That’s me.” Grabbing her sister’s hand, she rose, and together they walked inside, leaving all thoughts of Harrison, and that other woman, behind.
