A laugh sounds from the cell behind me before a man’s voice breaks the trembling silence. “You know damn well you shouldn’t be making her promises you can’t keep,” the strange man says. “No one leaves these cells.”
I go to look back over my shoulder, but Oakley grips my chin and forces my stare back to hers. “Are you a man of your word?” she asks in desperation, tears welling in her beautiful, blue eyes.
She knows me well enough to know that I am, at least when it counts, and I nod. I need to put her heart at ease.
“Do you remember our basketball game?” she questions as Harrison tries to pull me away, but I grip onto the bars tighter, refusing to move, the look in her eye almost bringing me to my knees. “You each owe me a favor, and I’m calling it in. Save me, Sawyer.”
“We will,” I promise her, letting her see the conviction in my stare. “Be ready. This goes down tonight.”
She nods and with that, Harrison pulls me away. “Come on, lover boy,” he rumbles, sick of my shit. He drags me away, not allowing me another second to put her at ease. As wrong as it feels walking away, I know I have to. In order to get her out of here, I have to get back to the boys.
Harrison all but drags me back up the rickety stairs and shoves me through the heavy metal gate, slamming it behind me to find my own way back. I whip around, clutching onto the gate and leveling him with a hard stare. “That girl is important. She means a great deal to a lot of people. You take care of her. If anything happens before I can get her out of here, I’m coming for your throat.”
Harrison smirks as though welcoming the fight, and slinks away into the darkness without another word. Not wasting a damn second, I turn abruptly and fly back up the long, twisting corridor with my phone in hand.
It barely rings before Zade’s voice cuts through the line. “What is it?”
“Oakley,” I tell him. “I’ve found her.”
Chapter 6
DALTON
“FUCK,” Zade roars, pacing back and forth through his penthouse, his hands pressed firmly at his temples. He stops and turns to face Sawyer. “How the fuck are we supposed to get her out of there?”
Sawyer shakes his head as the image of my girl in that fucking cell eats me alive. I’ve gotta give it to Joe. Considering he wanted her kept hidden, he chose the best fucking place to put her. Only he couldn’t have known Nikolai was put down there barely twenty-four hours beforehand. Nobody knew, and he sure as fuck wouldn’t have known that Sawyer would walk those damp corridors and find her. Hell, if it weren’t for Nikolai trying to kill her the other night, we never would have found her. We never would have even considered looking in those cells.
“I don’t fucking know,” Sawyer says. “But I promised her we would do this tonight, and I’m not about to break that promise. Besides, she called in her favor. We have to do this.”
“Favor?” Zade grunts. “The fuck are you talking about?”
Cross scoffs, almost amused. “The basketball game. We cut her a deal, remember? She and Dalton won, and now each of us owes her a favor.”
I shake my head. “Fucking waste of her favors,” I mutter as Cross strides across the room and puts Venom into her enclosure, knowing damn well what we’re about to do isn’t somewhere he should be bringing her. “We would have gone after her anyway.”
“Too fucking right,” Zade says. “Now that we know where she is, she’s not slipping out of my fingers again. We go tonight. Whatever we have to do, we do it. I’m not forfeiting my claim because we can’t figure out how to break some bitch out of a prison cell. I hope she’s fucking ready.”
“She’s ready,” Sawyer says. “She might fucking hate us, but she’ll tolerate us if it means getting out of there.”
“Good,” Zade says, his eyes hardening, knowing just how fucking dangerous breaking into the prison system is. If we were to get caught, it’s our heads. The Circle won’t excuse this shit, not even for the sake of retrieving Zade’s sacrifice. “Let’s do this.”
We file out of his penthouse and into the elevator, pressing the button for the private underground parking garage. The elevator quickly plunges to the bottom and then we’re pouring out into the sea of Zade’s luxury cars, a collector’s wet dream. Despite the array of cars we can choose from, we head straight for the black Escalade and pile in, peeling out of the private underground garage, and flying toward Zade’s storage locker.
The car ride is silent, each of us deep in thought.
