“You sound so certain,” I say.

“Have you even done this before?” Brom asks him.

“What do you think?” Crane says.

Brom shakes his head and shrugs. “I honestly don’t know, Crane, you’re you. You could have had séance orgies every Sunday night for all we know.”

Crane lifts his chin slightly and sniffs. “Well, I haven’t. There’s a first time for everything.” He gives me a steady look. “We take the elixir now. You will get on the ground. I will cut you, and we will cut ourselves, and the blood will flow. Then I will fuck the hell out of you, and you’re going to suck Brom’s cock, and we’re both going to come inside you.”

“Christ,” Brom swears, his voice thick as he reaches a hand down over his bulge.

Crane quickly grabs Brom’s hand and snatches it away, twisting it to the side, enough to make Brom grunt in pain. “And as we’re coming, I’m going to recite the lines of a spell to invite the spirits in and take the horseman out. If it doesn’t work, if we have to do it again tonight, we will.”

I feel delirious just listening to this. “But if we invite the spirits in…”

“They can’t stay,” Crane says adamantly. “The three of us will be fused to each other, there won’t be any room inside us. All of our energy will be inside each other.”

“You do realize I’m not a witch,” Brom glowers.

“It’s in your blood, whether you want it to be or not,” Crane says. “And besides, this should still work even if one of us isn’t magically inclined.” He places a leveling gaze on me and then back to Brom. “Do we all understand? Are we all in agreement? Kat, this is your last chance to back out. We can leave it to us just fucking in the woods and that’s that.”

“As if that’s trivial,” I say under my breath, then I straighten up. “I’m not backing out.”

Crane gives me a quick smile. “Brave girl,” he says. “Bottoms up.”

He uncorks the top of his bottle and drinks the elixir down. Brom and I do the same in unison. Ugh. I can’t help but make a face. It tastes awful, like strong bitters mixed with too much salt, but I manage to swallow it down.

“Now I will officially start the ritual,” Crane says.

He goes around the circle, placing the quartz and selenite crystals at certain intervals, then walks around clockwise and then counterclockwise, chanting something under his breath. Because he’s doing this all naked, with an erection, it looks very primitive indeed.

“The ritual has begun,” he says, titling his head up to the sky. “The circle may not be broken.”

“When do we know it’s working?” I ask Crane as he comes back and takes the bottles from us and places it beside his bag.

“You’ll know,” he says to me, his brows lowering. “Go to the middle of the circle and get on your hands and knees.”

I swallow hard at his direction, but do as he says. I go to the middle of the clearing then I drop down to my knees, then my hands, my rear facing them. I hear Crane whisper something to Brom, and whatever it is sounds detailed and I can’t help but shiver, but whether it’s from anticipation or fear, I can’t tell. So far, I don’t feel anything from the elixir. I had hoped it at least had a tranquilizing or calming effect.

I see their shadows cast by candlelight as they walk over to me. Brom goes in front of me, dropping to his knees, his cock right in front of my face, crying tears of arousal. My mouth automatically salivates, and I make a move for it, but then Crane is grabbing my hips tightly.

“Stay still,” he whispers to me. “This will hurt.”

At that warning I freeze, the air hitching in my throat, and Brom reaches down and places his fingers under my chin, making me look up to meet his eyes.

“I’ve got you, daffy,” he says to me.

Then my back explodes in pain. I cry out as the knife runs from between my shoulder blades and down beside my spine, the urge to vomit passing through me.

“Look at me, look at me,” Brom commands, his grip tighter on my chin. “Hey, Kat, look at me.”

I manage to open my eyes, wincing hard as the blade continues to run down my back.

“Breathe,” he says to me, his dark eyes piercing. “You’re not breathing, it hurts more when you don’t breathe. You need to breathe. Breathe in. Breathe in. Come on.”

I open my mouth and try to take in a breath, the knife still trailing toward my tailbone, and now I’m gritting my teeth at the pain as it envelopes me, and I have to close my eyes again.

“I’m sorry,” Crane says softly. “I can’t do this fast or I’ll make a mistake. Almost done. You’re being such a good girl.”
