“Pack a bag. We might be gone for a couple of days.” I’ve been thinking about this all day and I guess I finally made my decision.

She jumps up. “But… what about my father? He may need me.”

“We’re not going far,” I say over my shoulder. “I need to tell one of my guys what’s going on.” I chuckle at her stunned look.

I make my way down the stairs and enter our office. Edge is sitting behind an old beat-up desk, typing on his laptop. The desk has definitely seen better days. It’s old and dark wood. My grandfather probably put notches on it every time he fucked someone on it, so not only is it beat-up and ugly, but also for family history alone, I can’t get rid of it.

“Hey, man.” I open up the cabinet for the keys to one of my cars.

He looks over at me, says, “Blade,” and returns to his computer.

I stand twirling the keys and take in his wrinkled clothes and dark circles. “What’s up, Edge? I’m sick of all your dark shit.”

He leans back rubbing his hands over his face and sips his beer. “I don’t know what you want me to say.” He takes another drink. “Dolly. Dolly hates the Disciples. So… my life sucks.”

I nod and look around this small room that holds a safe, some filing cabinets, and the beat-up desk. “I didn’t know you guys were back together.”

He snorts and lays his head back on the chair. “We’re not, Jason. She wants me to leave the Disciples, man. How can I leave my family? And why would she want me to? It’s not like she wasn’t raised in it too.” He looks at me.

I don’t know what to say. Unlike a lot of the guys, Edge and I share something. His old man was with my dad. Died of cancer years ago and the Disciples is all Edge has ever known. He’s never left, so Dolly’s demand for him to leave for her is a mistake.

“I’m thinking about taking Eve to my house, get away—”

“She’s the one, Jason. I’d say don’t fuck it up, but if you’re taking her to your house, you’re obviously serious.” The pain in his eyes makes me uncomfortable. He looks at the beer bottle then slams it on the desk and types on his laptop again.

“You know where to find me.” I start to walk out.

“Hey Prez?” I turn. “You look awfully fancy, man. Where you going?”

I look down at my clothes. I’m in dark jeans and a tight, long-sleeved, green waffle T-shirt.

“I’m taking Eve out to dinner.”

His lips twitch. “I want to laugh, but since you’re the Prez and all, I won’t. Have fun. This is like your first date in years, right?”

I stare at him.

“What? It’s an honest question.”

“You know I haven’t gone on a date in probably ten years.” I twirl the keys again, daring him to say anything else. He doesn’t but smiles and takes another sip of beer.

“I’ll be sure to let Axel know.”

I nod, and for a few seconds, I feel like a dick. What the hell am I doing? Then a pair of long legs descends the stairs.

“Good, do that,” I say, trying to reason that it’s no big deal that I’m doing all this. But it is a big deal—this is something I’ve never done.

I reach for her bag. “You ready? Got everything?”

“I think so.” I guide her, my hand at her lower back, unable to stop from caressing her ass. She swirls around and dazzles me with a white smile. I open the door to my black Dodge Viper watching how she gracefully sinks into my leather seat. Her big eyes light up as she looks around. “You know, I was never in a new car before I got with you. I love the smell. This is new, right?” She sniffs and wiggles into the buttery black leather seats.

“It’s pretty new. I don’t drive it as much as a car like this deserves.” I start up the engine and it rumbles to a perfect purr as we take off. I reach for her leg resting my hand on it. She’s happily looking out the window as her hand reaches down to hold mine. I take a breath at the sheer intimacy of it. Simply holding hands while I drive makes me have those emotions I’m ashamed of having. She makes me weak and I despise it. But the farther I get from the compound, the more I can breathe. It’s me and Eve, and I want to immerse myself in her tonight.

“So…” I push the volume down on the steering wheel. She turns sideways to face me.

“What do you feel like? Sushi? Want to try?” I wink at her, and she cocks her head and smiles.
