She straightens, her eyes the baby blue hue that claimed my heart the day she was first attacked. “It’s the most romantic and beautiful thing that has ever happened to me.”
Her sincerity threatens to take me down. I swore I’d never give her the chance, but now the words come out before I can stop them. “Will you marry me, Rowan?”
Her smile is blinding and she bobs her head rapidly. “You know I will. The answer was always yes.”
I crash my mouth over hers, ignoring the singes of pain in my lips and jaw. She melts, twisting her tongue and stroking mine in rhythm. My dick hardens, pushing against the soft material of my pants and into the counter between us.
She whimpers down my throat, giving me deeper access. I take everything she’s giving, pouring it back.
The security system beeps, announcing a visitor, and I tear away, frustration racing through my bloodstream.
“Can’t I fuck my fiancée in peace?”
“Honey, we can’t have sex for a week.”
I squint at her, frustration ratcheting up. “Who said that?”
“Major told me you still may have internal injuries, and we had to wait.”
“He’s dead.”
“Who’s dead?” Major walks in the front, ushering Jewls in carefully.
“You’re dead.”
He takes in the scene, his mouth splitting into a wide, shit-eating grin. “Oh, that. Figured you could feel my pain.”
“Your situation differs from mine.”
“What are y’all jabbering about?” Jewls looks skeptically at her husband. “What did you do?”
“Informed me we couldn’t have sex for a week,” Rowan pipes in openly.
Jewls’ eyes pop and she backhands him playfully. “Where did that come from?”
“Wanted someone to commiserate with.”
“I delivered twelve pounds of humans two weeks ago. My vagina is in repair mode.”
My hard-on dies at her statement.
“Besides, it’s only eight weeks.”
“Six,” he counters, looking slightly panicked.
“Eight or more, depending on if we find birth control to repel your super-sperm.”
Rowan giggles, dropping her head to my shoulder. “Here we go.”
“Shutting this conversation down,” I announce, setting Rowan on her feet.
The shriek reverberates around the room, Jewls rushing over and shunting me aside.
“This is… Does this mean? Oh my God, are you engaged?!?”
“Yes.”
Jewls hops up and down with Rowan’s hand in hers so eagerly I’m afraid she’s going to pull it out of the socket.
“Baby, tone it down before you give yourself black eyes.”
She stops bouncing, slicing him a dirty glare. “My boobs are contained in this monstrosity of a bra that allows me to feed your boys every hour.”
“My boys don’t eat every hour.”
In a matter of a minute, we’ve gone from vaginas to birth control to sperm to now breastfeeding.
I’m done.
Thankfully, Harley and Ace walk back in. “We saw Jewls and Major leaving and knew your privacy was over.” She beelines for Rowan, inspecting her hand.
“It’s stunning.”
Rowan stares at her hand in wonder, a single tear falling.
“Baby?”
“Ford, it’s… it’s… I don’t have words. It’s the most exquisite ring I’ve ever seen.”
“You haven't seen your ring?” Jewls asks incredulously.
“Well, we kinda had some words, and then we were kissing… and about to do other things until you showed up.”
“Cockblockers,” I grouse.
“Look at the bright side. At least, now you know you can have sex.” Major smiles smugly.
“I couldn’t wait. All morning I’ve been a bundle of nervous energy,” Harley chirps.
“You knew?” Jewls squeaks.
Harley’s jaw drops, shutting quickly, guilt written all over her face.
“Did you know?” Jewls points to Major.
“We all knew.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“He picked up the ring yesterday, then I was busy with a rescue mission that got messy. When I got home this morning, I relieved you and your mom and had a few hours with my boys.”
“You’re lucky you’re so sexy with them or you’d be dead meat.”
“Glad I’ve got that going for me.”
The security monitor chirps, a caravan of black Suburbans driving up.
“I’ll start the coffee.” Rowan scoots around me, Jewls stopping her.
“Let me. You stay with Ford.” Her gaze meets mine. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
She scuttles away with wet eyes, muttering, “Damn hormones.”
James, Robbie, Finn, Max, Captain Boyd, two ATF agents, a DEA agent, and a member of the Drug Task Force all crowd into the living room.
Finn and Max set up a laptop, streaming into Talon’s hospital room. His parents crowd his bed. April looks ragged and Mark is pissed. I’m taken off-guard when the screen splits, showing my parents’ kitchen. Mom clutches my dad’s arm, her face filling with relief when she spots me.
“Thank Jesus.”
“Mom, I told you I was okay.”
“You’ll never understand a mother’s worry.”
“Truth!” Jewls calls out.
Another beep sounds, a dark Lexus parking on the street. “What the fuck?” I spew, watching Tera walk tentatively up to the house.
“We asked her to come,” Robbie informs us. “After we paid her a visit this morning.”
“Why?”
“Because she fills in holes to this clusterfuck.”
The room is silent when she enters, her complexion ashen and eyes bloodshot.
One look at me and tears stream down her cheeks. “Ford. Oh God.”
