I remember my friends telling me that Haidyn shared his chosen with another. He didn’t care about her, but a Lord never does. We’re just objects to play with.

Ashtyn crosses her arms over her chest.

“Show her,” Laura calls out.

“Show me what?”

A light comes on in the room next door. A window in the wall shows a man hanging from the ceiling. It’s Haidyn. My wide eyes go to his cuffed wrists that are strung above his head and secured to the chain. He’s shirtless just like in the last video they sent me. His jeans are low on his hips, his body stretched while it gently sways back and forth.

My hand covers my mouth when I see the blood that runs from his cuffed wrists. He’s covered in sweat, and white pads are stuck on his chest and abdomen. They are connected by wires to a machine that sits on a roller cart next to him. The hood is still over his head, and I bet he’s still gagged. How much time has passed since the last video they sent me of him when his father entered the room with three other Lords when they tased him?

His father did this to him. Because of her. He gave her a sedative instead of the adrenaline, and he’s the one being punished.

The door opens to the opposite room, and someone new enters with a black cloak and Lords mask on. “Who is that?” Ashtyn asks.

It’s Haidyn! How does she not know that?

The guy in the cloak turns on the machine and flips a switch. “Ready for your session?”

Haidyn doesn’t move or answer, and I blink, my eyes stinging watching him hang there. I hope he’s unconscious.

“Let’s turn it up this time. I think your last session was too easy.” He turns a knob, and the lights dim as Haidyn shakes, his legs kicking, muscles straining. They’re electrocuting him.

“Stop!” Ashtyn says, slamming her hands on the glass. “What the fuck is he doing? Why is he doing that?”

“Actions have consequences, Ashtyn.”

The switch is turned off, and Haidyn sags in the cuffs. He sways back and forth, the toes of his boots lightly touching the concrete floor while his abs flex at his heavy breaths.

The guy in the mask turns it on again, and Haidyn’s body begins to spasm. Ashtyn bangs on the glass. “Stop. Stop. You’re going to kill him.”

The man in the Lord’s mask laughs at her.

“How do you not know that man doesn’t deserve his punishment?” Laura asks Ashtyn.

The Lord slaps Haidyn on the back, and it causes him to spin around in the chains. There are more of those white pads on his back as well, and red marks that cover his tan skin. They whipped him. Now the scars make sense.

“Why?” Ashtyn demands, and I want to punch her in the goddamn face. It’s because of you he’s there. And the sad part is that she doesn’t even know who it is. “Why are you making me watch this? Why did you want to even see me?”

Laura gives Ashtyn a soft smile. “This is a reminder, Ashtyn, from the Spade brothers.” She must be talking about their fathers. “That you are a guest here, and it will be best to remember that.”

The Lord in the opposite room turns off the white patches, and Haidyn hangs in the cuffs connected to the chains. “Until next session,” he states before walking over to the door. He shuts off the light, bathing the room in darkness before he leaves Haidyn hanging there.

FIFTY-ONE

CHARLOTTE

Isnuck out of Haidyn’s house while he was occupied in his office with whoever the Lord was that I answered the door for. After I watched the video, I grabbed my purse and ran.

I spent my day running errands, went by my house, then made it to the spa. Hours have gone by, and I haven’t heard from him. It’s hard to get in touch with someone when you turn your cell off. But I’ve kept my eyes open. I’ve never been more aware of my surroundings than I have today to see if he’s following me. But nothing. He’s going to be so pissed when I get back to his house, but a part of me is looking forward to it.

I’m being woken up by the nurse as she removes the IV from my arm, and I already feel better, but of course that could have been the nap. I didn’t mean to fall asleep, but I also couldn’t stop it. Haidyn keeps me worn out. A part of me thinks that’s on purpose. She hands me a water this time, and just like the previous drink, I chug it down.

“Enrique can’t see you today,” she says, and I sit up straighter with a sickening feeling in my gut.

“Why not?” I ask.
