Done.

When I meet him by the door, I find him checking his wrist for the time.

“I’m ready,” I announce, and his eyes glide over my body before they reach my eyes.

“You have no makeup on,” he states.

I touch my face. “I don’t own any,” I answer.

He huffs before he walks out the door. “Best fucking behavior, or next time I’ll push you off a cliff.”

“Have a great night,” Nancy says. As she approaches me, she reaches into her pocket and hands me something. I take it, and when I open my palm, there’s a tube of bright-red lipstick. I thank her and hurry out to the car, where Kyson is waiting. He drives in silence, and I flip down the sun visor and use the tiny mirror while I apply the lipstick. Rolling my lips together with a pop, I turn to show Kyson. “Better?” I ask him.

He cracks his neck as he pulls to a stop, not bothering to answer or even looking my way. When he gets out, I do the same, walking around the car to stand next to him.

“Don’t talk to anyone,” he orders, and those haunted eyes find mine.

“What if someone says hello? Am I supposed to pretend I can’t hear them?” I ask.

“Don’t be a smartass,” he grumbles, walking ahead of me.

As I take in our surroundings, I see a lot of people dressed nicely, it makes me want to tug at my clothes self-consciously, but I resist the urge. Damn, I’m way underdressed.

I follow him inside to an opulent, lush-carpeted, chandeliered room where waiters walk around with polished silver trays plated with food. I take a small burger slider from the first one and waste no time putting it in my mouth.

“Do you have to eat everything you see?”

I don’t even bother covering my mouth as I smile at him. He rolls his eyes, and I go to reach for a second, but he grabs my hand and puts it down at my side. Then he reaches for the tray of champagne and hands me a glass.

“So I can drink but not eat,” I say, nodding. “You have some weird logic.”

Kyson ignores me as someone calls his name and starts talking to him. I stand there watching him but not listening because I couldn’t care less.

“That dress looks awfully familiar.” I turn to a woman I recognize. It takes me a moment to place her, but the last time I saw her, she was in a white dress. “Kyson’s date, correct?” she asks, raising her glass to her lips and taking a small sip. I do the same as we stare at each other. “Actually, I think that’s my dress. The very same one Kyson tore from me before he fucked me. He never gave it back.” I’m not sure what she’s trying to prove here.

Is she trying to upset me?

Make me jealous?

Because I sure as shit ain’t fucking him.

But good on her for doing so.

Pulling the glass away from her lips, she puckers them and glances over me. “Looked better on me.”

“I can see why you were together,” I say, just as I feel him come up next me. “You are both cunts.” I smile and walk away.

Stepping up to the bar, I lean in and wave the bartender down. When he reaches me, I say, “Two shots of tequila, please.” He raises a brow, and I see that all he’s serving is champagne. “You do have some stashed back there, right?”

“Umm…yeah.”

“Well, I want it.” He stands there unsure at first, shifting from foot to foot, but when I don’t move, he reaches under the bar and pulls out a bottle. I don’t even know why we’re here or what this event is for. But I do know I want all the drinks.

I’ve found that in my life, alcohol helps numb the pain of everything.

And I need a lot of numbing.

“Do you plan to get drunk and pass out again, looking like trash?” Kyson asks from behind me.

“Did you know I was wearing her dress?” I ask, not bothering to look at him.

“Yes, of course I did. I bought it for her after all.”

“It looks better on me,” I add, even though I know that’s a lie because I hardly fill it out, where she has a damn dream body.

The bartender comes back with my shots, and I shoot a happy smile at him. Taking one straight away, I go to reach for the second, only to see it disappear before my very eyes.

Kyson throws it over his shoulder, and my eyes go wide. He just threw away perfectly good alcohol. Asshole.

“Why are we even here?” I mumble. “You kill people. Why do you need to socialize?” I grumble.

He gets right in my face. “Learn to keep your mouth shut. Or I’ll shut it for you,” he replies through gritted teeth before he storms off.
