Kind of a strange name for a gang, but it was none of her business.
Mikey and Tobias had taken her to check into the hotel, and then for some evening shopping.
As they’d headed back to the hotel, there had been a street market going on. Cat loved markets.
Everything would have been fine . . . if her stupid brain hadn’t started playing tricks on her.
She’d been so sure she’d seen her mama in the distance that she’d taken off after her. Losing Mikey without meaning to.
God, Alejandro was going to be so mad.
Suddenly, someone came running toward them. The locks clicked, but before she could open the door, he was in, and they were taking off with the locks re-engaged.
Fuck. She needed to be quicker next time.
“Crap, she’s awake?” the new guy said, turning to look at her.
She kept her hands down as she tried to work on the rope that tied them together.
“Way to state the obvious, asshole,” she replied.
What could she say? Getting kidnapped made her crabby.
“Hey, shut up, bitch!” the second guy said. “Before I shut you up.”
“What’d you get for her jewelry?” the driver asked.
“One grand!”
Jesus. A thousand dollars? Her wedding ring alone was worth twenty-five thousand.
Dumbasses.
Were they still in Bismarck? How long until Alejandro found the necklace? Hopefully, if Mikey had gotten hold of Alejandro straight away, he wouldn’t be far behind her.
Except now that her necklace was gone, he’d have no idea where she was.
Shit. Shit.
She tried to study them as they drove. Both of her kidnappers were bigger than her, which wasn’t hard. They looked rough. Dirty. The driver had a long, skinny face. She was going to call him Bert. That made the greasy-haired one, Ernie.
“You guys are dead meat. You know that, right?”
“Shut the fuck up, bitch!” Ernie glared at her. “You’ve already been enough fucking trouble.”
“Aww, are your balls still sore, Ernie?” she crooned. She remembered that he was the one who’d grabbed her. She was upset that she hadn’t fought him harder. But when he’d slammed her against the wall of an alley, it had brought back too many memories of other hands touching her, hurting her.
She shuddered.
She’d finally come to her senses and slammed her knee against his balls. Unfortunately, Bert injected her with something before she could even think of running.
And it had been lights out for her.
“Fuck you, you stupid bitch! I’m going to fucking end you!” Ernie turned and lunged at her, slapping her before grasping her around the throat.
“Calm down, Petey,” Bert yelled. “You can’t fucking kill her! Jimmy said to keep her alive!”
Who the hell was Jimmy?
Ernie let her go with a shove and turned to look over at Bert. “What you s’ppose he wants her for?”
“Dunno. He just said to grab her and that he’d tell us where to take her. Said he’d pay us double. Course, he doesn’t know about us pawning her jewelry for a pretty penny. It’s all win-win for us.”
“Sure is,” the other guy agreed.
She hoped Alejandro would be able to get her rings and necklace back.
They’re just things, Cat.
What matters is getting out of this alive.
Ernie’s phone rang and he answered it. “Jimmy, hi. Yeah, we got her safe. Where? Billings? But why? Fine . . . fine.” He ended the call. “Fucking asshole, calling me names. He wants us to take her to some place in Billings. Said she’ll be collected there.”
“By who?” she asked. Were they selling her to someone?
“None of your business, bitch,” Ernie sneered. “Let’s go.”
“Fine, but we’ll need to stop for gas,” Bert grumbled. “Fucking Billings is hours away.”
“Do you know who my husband is? And what he’ll do once he finds you?” she asked.
“Course we know who he is!” Ernie scoffed. “But that don’t matter because he ain’t gonna find you.”
She swallowed heavily. Fuck. Seemed like she was going to have to save herself.
As they drove along, Cat worked on the knots around her wrists. They were a bit loose, and she was confident she could free her hands with enough time.
Half an hour later, Bert pulled into a gas station.
Shit. Her wrists weren’t free yet.
She looked out at the gas station. Maybe she should make a run for it as soon as the door unlocked.
“Pump us some gas and get yourself something to eat,” Bert said to Ernie. “You’re always grumpy when you’re hungry.”
“Or when some bitch knees me in the balls,” Ernie replied.
Bert turned and grabbed hold of her arm as Ernie got out.
Fuck. There went her plan to dive out of the car.
“Listen to me, bitch,” he spat out.
“Mierda! You want to say it without spraying it all over my face? And really, dental hygiene is a necessity. Buy a toothbrush.”
Smack!
Ouch. Fuck. That stung. Tears filled her eyes, but she wasn’t going to let them drop and let this asshole see that his slap hurt her cheek.
