“You must have gone with this guy.”

“I did,” he said. “I was done being the punching bag for that prick. None of the guys would talk to me because they hated having to hold me down and fucking with my face like that. Some of the girls would say that I could have been a model if I got out of the shithole, but I ignored them.”

Jade nibbled her lip, curious to know what happened next, but also not wanting to rush him.

“So, I went with him and it would seem he was a man who found people—people that didn’t want to be found. He trained me. He told me he saw real potential in me, and he made sure I was capable of taking care of myself.”

“He taught you to kill?” Jade asked.

Braxton nodded. “And I was good at it. I also had a knack for locating people. I don’t think he took too kindly to that.”

“Why?”

“I became a problem to him, and then one night he decided it was time to eliminate the competition.”

“What?”

Braxton nodded. “I had started to find the people he was looking for, and I dealt with them. I didn’t have any feelings on the matter, and it came easy to me. He didn’t like that I started to raise the ranks, and more people wanted me because I got the job done.”

“What happened?”

“He tried to kill me and failed. You see, he only taught me so much, but I went out and taught myself. He put me in a difficult position and I defended myself.”

She took hold of his hand, trying to give him strength. “And what happened to the farmer?”

“After I took care of him, I went back to the farmer, dealt with him, and then made sure to free the kids that were there.” He shrugged. “I’ve never looked back. I’m the man they call when they want something done.”

“And what happened today? You’re hurt.”

“They tried to take me out, but don’t worry. I know who it is, and I’ll take care of it.”

Braxton wasn’t afraid. He watched as Jade bustled around him, trying to keep busy. His wounds would heal. She hadn’t even asked what the other guys looked like, and she didn’t need to. They were all dead, every last one of them.

It had been a trap but the idiot gangster that had put his men up to the challenge of taking him out hadn’t stayed around to see how it ended. That was his first mistake. The second was assuming a room full of his soldiers would be able to take him out.

“Are you comfortable?” Jade asked, reaching behind him to plump up his pillows.

He wrapped his arms around her, refusing to let her go. “Not quite.”

She let out a little gasp and he moved her into position so that she was straddled against his body. He’d been here a couple of days. Jade had slept beside him, and he’d loved watching her sleep. Each morning, he had seen the shock on her face as she looked at him still here.

She would get out of bed, go to the bathroom, cook him breakfast, and then ask if he needed anything. She had even offered to stay home with him, but he didn’t want to run the risk of breaking her schedule.

People were looking for him, and so far he was able to keep a low profile. He had no intention of leaving her apartment until he was fit enough to take out the son of a bitch that thought he could attack him.

He spent most of the day plotting his revenge. Well, it wasn’t really revenge. The stupid fuck had given him no choice. If he allowed him to live, then quite simply, other people and contracts would treat him like a fool, and he wasn’t having that.

The gangster signed his death warrant the moment he set the trap. All he had to do was wait to deliver it.

He knew work had come in for him as well, but he’d ignored it. For now, he was focused on only one person—Jade. She’d been a distraction to him. Other men might be pissed with themselves for allowing their thoughts to be completely consumed by their woman. Not Braxton. Thinking about Jade, imagining his time with her, gave him a sense of peace. One he wasn’t willing to give up.

And so, as he moved her close to his cock, his wounds no longer hurt, he stared into her beautiful brown eyes. Braxton had come to a decision that he wasn’t going to let her go. He knew he could take care of her, keep her and any family they had safe. All he had to do was handle this final situation, and then everything would be clear.

“I find this hard to believe. You’re happy with me sitting on your lap. Aren’t you, like, … in pain? I saw your wounds.” She pursed her lips and looked so stern and cute at the same time. He couldn’t get enough of her. She drove him wild.
