The woman nods excitedly at Fable, then turns to me. “Looks like you still do.”

I lift a hand to touch my cheek. My skin feels warm. Is it obvious to her, too, that I’ve been thinking naughty thoughts?

“We had fun,” I say, noncommittal, as I smile to hide the words threatening to burst free from my soul.

I walked in on my best friend last night, and I didn’t walk away TILL HE FINISHED. Now, please buy a necklace to fund my vibrator collection.

“I hear you’ll be doing it again,” she says.

Watching him jerk? I’d love to. “You did?” I ask carefully.

“I saw on the app earlier today that you’re doing a whole how-to series. I can’t wait,” she says.

Wow. Date Night moves fast.

“I’ll be watching the rest of them,” she adds, then studies my face for a second. “You know, you do kind of have a glow. I would love to get the name of your face cream.”

“Secret cream,” I blurt out.

Fable turns to me. “What? Is that a new brand?”

God, my mouth is a traitor. I need to shut the eff up. “I mean it’s called Secret Night Cream,” I say, but that really isn’t any better. “I think the company is called Left-Handed Dreams. But let me check when I get home.”

The customer quirks a curious brow. “That’s an interesting name.”

“Well, you know, it’s hard to find an original name these days,” I say breezily.

“True, that,” she says, then leaves.

Fable shoots me a look that calls bullshit. “Left-Handed Dreams? What’s up with you today?”

I was a bad girl last night and spied on my friend, and now I’m cursed to never stop thinking about my best friend’s dick. Also, NEXT TIME I SEE HIM, WHAT DO I DO WITH MY EYES?

“Just feeling all the good vibes today,” I say.

She’s skeptical as she says, “If you say so.”

She returns to her work, and I’m about to return to mine when my phone buzzes with a text.

I take it out and see Carter’s name. My pulse spikes in excitement, and I decide I’d better read his text in the back of the store. “I’ll be right back,” I tell Fable, then duck into my tiny office and shut the door.

My heart races as I open the message.

Carter: Date Night is already promoting this How To Date series. Guess we should figure out when the next date is and what we’re doing? You’re in charge, Sunshine.

I start to write back, but another text lands before I’m done. He’s on a roll.

Carter: P.S. I just got off the field from practice. Coaches worked us hard today. I’ll be working out with the guys for a while, but I’m free tonight if you want to plan date-y things.

Carter: Also, you’re such a bad girl.

Shit. He knows. He’s about to bust me.

My heart beats in a wild frenzy. But it’s best to play it cool. If he’s going to bring a well-deserved penance on me, I’ll make him spell it out. I’m not serving up my sins.

Rachel: I am? Any reason?

Please don’t say THAT reason. It was only like a minute of bad. I swear. Okay, maybe two. BUT YOU SAID MY NAME! TWICE! I WANTED TO RSVP!

Carter: Because you keep distracting me. We never did that puzzle. Clearly you’re afraid of my puzzle prowess, so the only solution is for you to bake me some brownies tonight and I will take you on.

I let out a huge sigh. “Thank god,” I mutter.

He doesn’t know what I did. But it’s also a good thing I opened these messages back here in my tiny office. Because I am on fire from the you’re in charge to the got off to the take you on.

Yes, Carter, take me on. Take me anywhere. Just take me.

The thing is…he’s up for girlfriend lessons but I don’t know if that means he’s up for bedroom practice too.

I’m pretty sure I am. One night—what’s the harm? I really want him. I don’t think I can fight it anymore. Especially now that I know he thinks of me that way too.

Except I need to be certain. I need to know if he’s truly into me. Maybe he has a spank bank of friends he cycles through—I don’t know. Maybe he jerks it to lots of different ladies, and my number just came up in the rotation last night. Maybe my name moaned into the night means nothing.

Thanks to Edward, I have no clue what’s normal. I never walked in on Edward whacking it to his other woman. Or to me, for that matter.

When I see Carter this evening, I won’t let on about last night. I’ll keep that little nugget to myself for a while longer. But maybe I can take the temperature of the situation. Feel him out while hedging my bets.
