“Eric, are you asking me to go steady? I think my parents did that in college.”

He sits up, forcing me to stand straight. “I’m asking your vagina to go steady with my dick.”

I snort while he stands, giving me a serious look and a single lifted eyebrow.

“You want me to be your girlfriend?”

“That’s what I just said.” He saunters to the bathroom.

“I gotta go. I’ll consider your offer,” I call when he’s behind the bathroom door and I’m halfway to the front door.

After I’ve showered and made coffee and a huge breakfast, Freya shuffles her bare feet to the kitchen.

“Good morning.” I smile, glancing up from my book. I’ve reread the chapters for the next book club discussion.

“Oh lord,” she rolls her eyes and pours coffee. “I know that look. You had sex. Good sex. Afterglow sex.”

I giggle. “May—be. Or maybe I’m just excited about the next book club.”

Freya sets her coffee on the island and twists her wild hair into a bun while pinning me with an untrusting scowl. “I don’t believe you. I know you love books, but they don’t leave you looking like you rode the world’s biggest dick for eight seconds.”

My face cracks under my out-of-control grin. “Can you keep a secret? And I mean, legit keep a secret, not like your usual promise to keep a secret that ends in you blabbing it to everyone after two glasses of wine. I’m talking about the locked vault. Can you do that?”

“You’re pregnant? Who’s the baby daddy? I bet it’s Carson. I can see him wanting to add a baby to the YouTube mix. The only thing that might get more views than Gilbert, the three-legged hero dog, is Gilbert, the three-legged hero dog with a baby. People love dogs and babies. I need a fucking dog and baby, so I can afford to bring my fiancé to me.”

“It’s not Carson’s baby.” I cover my mouth and shake my head. “No! I mean … dammit! You have me so messed up with your crazy dog and baby scenario. I’m not pregnant. No baby. No baby daddy. I had sex again with Eric, but not just any sex. We had book sex. Jasmine and Andrew's sex. He read more of the book. And he liked it. And he wants us to be exclusive.” I fold my hands at my chest to keep my limbs from flailing excitedly.

“What does that mean?” She wrinkles her nose.

“Exclusive?”

“No. Book sex?”

“He pulled me into his apartment last night, and he did to me what Andrew did to Jasmine. It was so hot.”

“Oh … that’s … weird.”

I roll my eyes. “Not weird. Mind-blowing. The best sex I’ve ever had—times a million. It’s not just the sex; it’s the book!”

She sips her coffee, resting one hand on the island. “You can have mind-blowing sex with a guy and not be book soulmates. Please tell me you get that.”

“Of course, I know that.”

But I don’t like to think about it.

“He’s coming to the next book club. I won’t be able to keep from blushing the whole time.” My cheeks flush just from saying the words and thinking about the group discussing the erotic scene while Eric stares at me, knowing what we did last night.

Knowing that he thinks I’m pretty.

Knowing that he wants to be exclusive.

Knowing that he likes my favorite book.

Freya pops her lips several times, eyes wide. “Okay. Well, it should be interesting.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

Eric: Wanna go on a date tonight?

I grin at his text while finishing the signup for the upcoming comp.

Anna: I do

Eric: Six?

Anna: Perfect

His invitation derails me for the rest of the day. I think I check off everything on my to-do list, but I’m not sure, and I don’t care. At five, I clock out and fly down the street on my bike, desperate to get showered and look pretty for our date.

“Let me,” Eric says behind me as I walk my bike toward the racks. He grins while lifting it into place for me.

“Such a gentleman.”

His lips twist, head bobbing in a non-committal way. “Sometimes.”

I toss him a grin over my shoulder while sauntering toward the stairwell. “And other times?”

“And other times …” He climbs the stairs behind me, hands on my hips. “I want to risk getting arrested for doing inappropriate things to you in public.”

I turn at the top of the stairs so we’re at eye level. “Sex in public?”

His lips twitch.

“Are you a thrill seeker?” I cant my head. “Or just a run-of-the-mill sex fiend disguised as a chivalrous gentleman?”

Eric gives nothing away beyond that barely detectable smile.

“Where are you taking me tonight?”

“Concert by the river.”

“Mat Kearney?”

Climbing the last two steps, he nods. I back into the door.

He might be able to control his grin, but I can’t. “I love Mat Kearney.”

As his hands slide along my neck, he whispers. “Lucky guy.”
