Joe chuckled. “Yeah, it’s been pretty cool. I hung out with my dad all day. Did some yard work. Talked.”

“You talked. What about?” she asked.

“Just stuff. You know, alpha stuff.”

She opened her mouth, closed it, and then heard the blessed sound of his stomach rumbling. “You’re hungry. I can feed you.”

Darcy went to move past him, cringing at how desperate she was to create some distance between them, but at the same time wanting to rub her body all over him. Crazy. So crazy.

Joe suddenly grabbed her arm and pulled her close. “Hey, you’re nervous.”

“And you’re not?”

He gave a little chuckle and she placed her hands on his chest. “Coming over here, yeah, I was nervous, but the moment you answered that door, it all went away.”

“I … I’m not very good at this. I don’t date well.”

“Don’t compare me to anyone else.”

“I won’t.” She wanted to say more but then didn’t know what to say. His stomach saved the day. “I’ll feed you first.”

Joe let her go with his hand sliding down her arm, but then, he suddenly gripped her fingers and pulled her close.

She fell against him, but he banded an arm around her back, sunk his fingers into her hair, and tilted her head back. She stared into his eyes, and then his lips were on hers.

Darcy had never been kissed before. It was probably insane to think of a forty-year-old wolf not experiencing a kiss, but she had been on a quest to find her mate. It was why she had also not been with a man before. The few dates she went on had ended in disaster, so there was no kiss good night.

This was more than just a kiss.

She moaned and in doing so, opened her mouth just a little, and Joe took full advantage, sliding his tongue between her lips. Touching his tongue with her own, she tasted him, kissing him back with equal passion. Joe pulled away and his lips were red. Hers felt slightly swollen as well.

“You’re so beautiful,” he said.

Again, his stomach growled and Darcy came back to reality. “Food.”

This time, as she pulled away, Joe didn’t make a single move to stop her. She walked into the kitchen, opened the fridge, and stared. She didn’t see ingredients, instead, she felt how swollen her lips were. They had touched Joe’s lips, kissed him.

Her nipples felt so tight and her pussy was slick with arousal. She felt on fire with a need, and even her wolf—her normally passive wolf—was once again pacing, making her demands known, which was insane, considering she was not supposed to be feeling or thinking anything.

Food.

Focus.

Joe needed feeding.

There was a slice of steak she had gotten for herself and some mushrooms as well. She started to grab the steak, peppers, mushrooms, and some spicy cheese. She didn’t have a lot of food available as she hadn’t gone shopping yet, but there was plenty to make some hearty sandwiches.

Turning around, she saw Joe had stepped into her kitchen, and even thought it wasn’t a big space, with him in the room, it suddenly felt so tiny.

“Steak sandwiches?”

“Sounds delicious.”

You can do this with him watching.

She got to work on slicing the meat thinly, and marinated it with some garlic, black pepper, and a touch of oil.

Joe didn’t talk, just stood by, watching her.

At first, she was nervous, but then the wolf that kept pacing inside her seemed to calm down. Joe was close, and that seemed to settle her down.

She fried the steak, the mushrooms, peppers, and onions, adding more garlic, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. When she was ready to build the sandwiches, she added everything onto the bread, including slices of spicy cheese, and cut them in half, serving them both some healthy portions.

They didn’t leave the kitchen, and she waited to see how Joe liked it, watching him take a bite of the sandwich. He let out a moan and winked at her.

Success.

Chapter Three

The following night, Joe arrived back at Darcy’s house. He enjoyed their food the previous night, sat with her, watched a movie, and before it got too late, he kissed her again, and went home.

He didn’t want to go home. His wolf was upset that he left her alone, but he had no choice. His parents asked him if he had a nice evening. He told them he had, took a long shower, and slept, dreaming about his mate.

Today, he had spent all day with his pop, helping around the pack, running errands, doing all the jobs he remembered doing as a kid, and feeling exactly the same as he did back then. He wasn’t learning anything. He was just doing errands, filling in for his dad, dropping off food, helping in the yard. The same old routine. And still, he wasn’t any wiser.
