The movie started, and everyone turned their attention to the old Terminator flick that was playing. He heard the boys laugh and joke about how fake everything looked, but they seemed into it as well.
When it was over, Roe’s mom, Vicki, came over to talk to August. They traded numbers and got things figured out about Reese working with Sean and Wyatt. He ended up swapping numbers with Roe and Holden too.
The whole ride home, Reese was rambling about the animals and how cool it would be if he got to draw them.
“Do you think we can do the welding thing too, Clint?” he asked, and damned if August’s heart didn’t swell.
“Hell yeah, we can. I’m game anytime. Your dad and I will see what we can figure out.”
“Thanks! I can’t wait to tell Pop all the things I’m going to get to do!”
That shouldn’t make him jealous, but part of him was. He tried to remind himself that Reese didn’t need to be excited to share with him since he already knew, but that didn’t help.
As if Clint could sense it, he looked over and shot him a smile that helped more than it should have.
A couple of minutes later, Clint pulled up in front of their house.
“Thanks for taking us, Clint,” Reese said, opening the door.
“Yeah, thanks for taking us,” August added. He lingered there, unsure why. He felt like there were things he wanted to say, but he didn’t know what.
“Anytime,” Clint replied. He gave August another grin, which he couldn’t help returning.
Should he invite Clint in? It was late, but August wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Everything that was going well in his life right now, it felt like it was because Clint was in it again, and August wanted to hold on to that. He wanted—
“Are you coming?” Reese asked, having been standing outside the back door, waiting for August to get out too.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m coming.”
August got out and stood there, waiting and watching while Clint drove away. And when he jerked off later that night, alone in his bed, it was to thoughts of his friend.
CHAPTER TEN
Clint
“So…what’s up with you and August?” Colby asked when they were at Mama Adaline’s for breakfast on Sunday.
“What do you mean what’s up with us?” Of course, he knew exactly what Colby was saying but decided to play ignorant on the topic. Besides, the truth was that he and August had nothing going on at all. Clint might be attracted to him and want to spend time with him, but that was as far as it went.
“You gonna pretend not to know what I’m talking about?” Colby asked.
“Sure am. Is Vince gonna move in with you?”
“I think so. We talked on the phone yesterday. But this isn’t about me. You’ve got feelings for that man.”
He sighed and set his menu down just as the waitress approached, saving him for a moment. He ordered an omelet while Colby got a breakfast burrito, and then they were alone again. “That man is just my friend. A friend who has only been back in my life a couple of weeks, I’ll remind you.”
“So? I don’t know if the time thing matters much, and I didn’t say you were marrying the guy. I just said you look at him with hearts in your eyes, is all.”
Clint wasn’t sure he liked that description. “Can’t figure out how I’m supposed to reply to that.”
Colby shrugged. “You’re not supposed to respond any certain way. Hell, I don’t even know why I brought it up. I could see it, though, and I’m certain I wasn’t the only one. You’ve dated people, but I’ve never seen you look at anyone like that. I know I sure as hell haven’t.”
Clint was definitely more interested in focusing on the second part of Colby’s statement. He was the only adult Covington who wasn’t in a committed relationship. As far as Clint knew, he hadn’t been in a couple of years, since he and Lulu broke up. “How come?”
“How come what?”
“Why haven’t you looked at anyone like that?”
Colby frowned. “Is that a question people can answer? Just haven’t met the right person, I guess. Also, I’m pretty sure this is about you, and you’re trying to get out of answering.”
Clint chuckled, then rubbed a hand over his face and dropped his head back against the booth. “Ah, hell, I mean, I’m attracted to him, of course. And maybe there’s always been a little something there just because we were such good friends and he was my first kiss and all. But he has a teenage son he’s focusing on. Now isn’t the time for him to look for a relationship, and I wouldn’t want to go there anyway and risk fucking up our friendship.”
“What if it didn’t fuck it up? You’re assuming something bad will happen or that you’ll break it off. Who’s to say it won’t go somewhere?”
