He wiped the sweat from his forehead, the trellis he was currently building for me intricate, with custom etchings around the wood that was personalized just for me.
“Are you hungry?” I called out, and the way his eyes became hooded told me he was hungry for something far different than the sandwiches I made. He started walking toward me in powerful strides, almost stalking me. And when he was right in front of me, Mateo pulled me in for an embrace.
I sighed when he slipped his hand on the back of my neck, holding me there possessively, and leaned in to kiss me. I didn’t care that he was sweaty from working all day outside under the sun. In fact, I got turned on even more by it.
When Mateo pulled away, I was breathless and disappointed that he hadn’t gone further. But I knew him, and he wouldn’t end this just yet.
“I hope you’re hungry,” I whispered.
He made this low, almost animalistic sound in the back of his throat. “Oh, I’m starving, baby.”
I knew he wasn’t talking about food.
He ran his thumb along my bottom lip, his focus on my mouth. “God, I love you.” He lifted his gaze to stare into my eyes. “I love you more every damn day, Charlotte.” He smoothed his thumb over my lip again. “And you’re so fucking pretty, the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen.”
I could have melted into a puddle right then and there from his words alone. “You know exactly what to say to make a girl feel good when she’s the size of a house.” My heart started beating a little faster at that. And then he lowered himself to his haunches, framed my very rounded belly, and rested his forehead on it.
“You’re perfect,” he whispered. Mateo looked up at me then, and the love I saw reflected on his face not only affected me in the best way, but our little one started kicking frantically. He chuckled and lifted my shirt to kiss my belly.
“You’re my woman, Charlotte, and this is my baby growing inside you.” The way he said those words was so possessive, as if he were a caveman making his claim known despite the fact that it was just us.
And I loved it.
“You’re the love of my life, baby. You know that, right?”
I ran my fingers through his hair and nodded. “I know that with my whole heart, the same way I know you know how much I love you, right?”
He stood, grinning, but before he stood completely, he cupped my cheeks and kissed me.
“You’re my happily ever after, Mateo,” I whispered against his lips.
“No, Charlotte. You’re my happily ever after, and I’m never letting you go.”
