“I’m not afraid,” I said quickly. “Don’t insult me like that again.”

“It wasn’t an insult. It wasn’t an insult when I said it at the island either.”

“The last time we were apart…it was so hard. Now that we’re king and queen, I thought we’d never have to do that again.” All the lonely nights. The fear that he’d been killed or hurt. The terror that we might not be reunited. It was horrific.

His hand slid into my hair, and he cupped my cheeks, directing my stare to his face. “I would never suggest this if HeartHolme’s fate weren’t on the line. Our family and our home are in danger.”

I knew he was right, but the separation was still a knife between the ribs. I gave a nod.

“I wish I could see you take Eagleton atop of a fire-breathing dragon.” His hand slid back down my cheek and to my neck, where his thumb pressed over the front of my throat and gave a gentle squeeze. His eyes watched his movements, watched his hand trail farther down the front of my dress until his palm stopped right between my tits. “You’ll have to tell me about it next time we see each other.” His eyes lifted again, looking at me with that same domineering stare he'd shown the crowd earlier. He wasn’t just the King of Kingdoms. He was the king of me.

My eyes stayed on his as I unclasped his cloak, as I loosened the chest plate of his armor and the belt that carried his heavy sword.

His arms remained at his sides as he watched me strip him down to his naked skin. It was a stare full of power. Authority. Intensity. He wasn’t doing a damn thing, but he somehow had control over the entire situation.

I removed what I could, getting him naked from the waist up. His body had become more muscular throughout our travels. His pecs were the size of shields, his abs were hills before the mountains. “Are you going to fuck your wife?” I tugged on his belt, and there was a loud clatter as the sword hit the floor in the scabbard.

“I will after she sucks me off.” His hand gripped my shoulder and pushed down, forcing me to my knees in front of him. Then he stepped closer, untying his pants and revealing his hard cock a second later. His hand was back in my hair again, controlling the placement of my head and neck, and he swiped his thumb over my bottom lip as he beckoned it to open.

My bottom lip dropped and my tongue flattened.

He shoved himself deep into my throat and fucked my mouth like it belonged to a whore rather than his wife.

The tears started in my eyes and soon dripped down my cheeks. I had to fight for breath, had to fight the fatigue in my muscles to keep my mouth open and my tongue flat. He fucked me like I had no rights, like he’d paid for my time and he wouldn’t stop until he got his money’s worth. But I reveled in it.

His hand fisted my hair, and he continued to thrust. “This is how a queen serves her king.”

Huntley stood in his full armor, speaking to his commander Tomas near the windows. They finished their conversation, and Tomas gave a slight bow before he dismissed himself. I was in my armor as well, identical to his, but my hair was in a long braid down my back. I walked up to him, my heart racing in both anticipation and fear.

When I came to his side, he turned and regarded me, giving me his focused stare.

I hadn’t thought our relationship would change after marriage, but it did.

I hadn’t thought our relationship would change now that we were king and queen.

I’d been wrong about that too.

Our relationship was deeper, having another layer of foundation that hadn’t been there before. It was easy to love each other despite our differences, but it was a unique challenge to trust each other as we ruled side by side. But that came naturally. Our ideologies were identical. Our hearts were too.

He continued to stare, his intense eyes shifting back and forth between mine. He must have known that words failed me because he said, “I’m sending Commander Brutus with you. His one and only job is to protect you—with his life.”

“Will he ride Storm?”

He shook his head. “Storm won’t allow anyone to ride him besides me. The duke will surrender the instant he sees you in the sky. Once you enter the city, kill him and his advisers.”

“But if he surrenders—”

“Look what happened with Edgerson. You can never trust them, regardless of what they say. All they have to do is kill you and take back control of the Kingdom. I’d judge them as a ruler if they had no interest in doing that.”
