“Relaxes you? I can’t tell. If that’s relaxation you showed me out in the living room, then I’d hate to see what you being worked up is like.”

She sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes.

“I’m just warmin’ up. I’ll get you next time, but tonight, I will throw in the towel,” she stated breathlessly, as if she’d just run a marathon. “I lost the bet, so I’ll Cash App you the fifty dollars.”

“I’m good. Take it as me lettin’ you off with a warning. A warning for talkin’ shit.” He winked at her.

“Naw, fair is fair. I’ll send you the money. But uh, yeah… I haven’t played in like seven or eight months though.” She kept wanting to drive home how rusty she was… Now as she said it behind hooded eyes, he wondered if it had a double meaning? He looked over his shoulder at her as she shrugged, then leaned against his kitchen counter, ankles and arms crossed.

He turned back around and scanned each shelf. He had boxes of granola, keto-friendly cereal, and protein bars. Nothing he was certain that she wanted. Then he spotted some chicken crackers. Grabbing the half-empty box that he often used when he fixed his delicious chili on cheat days, one of the few things he cooked to perfection, he turned around and handed them to her.

“Are these okay?”

“Mmm hmm.” She set the box on the counter and tore into them, not making much eye contact “Thank you.” She began shoveling them into her mouth, her glossy stiletto-shaped nails dragging along her lower lip. “When I play video games, my appetite soars,” she explained. “I’m a naturally hyper person, but competition? That makes it worse. Somethin’ about the adrenaline rush, I guess.” She stood there digging into that box, stuffing the crackers into her mouth, one after the other.

A bit of crumb gathered around the right side of her lips, and she licked it away with the tip of her slick pink tongue like a lizard going after a fly. Her bare feet moved about nervously against his floor with each fast and furious chew. The toe nails were cut short and perfect, a glossy light pink color coating each nail, sparkling and gleaming. The top of her right foot had an Ankh on it. The left, an Egyptian beetle and hieroglyphics. Everything about her dripped with beauty, enigmatic energy, and femininity. She kept bouncing about, as if she had ants in her pants. And yet, she remained sexy in the midst of it all. Munchies aside, something about her was different tonight. In a good way. He could feel it. See it. Hear it.

“You didn’t have to take off work tonight,” she stated as she finally began to slow down and chomp softer. “I would’ve understood.” She swallowed the last bit of food in her mouth. Apparently she’d overheard him on the phone when his boss called soon after they arrived at his house, asking him to work that evening.

“Nah.” He waved her off. “They called me into the club last minute and I just let ’em know that I already had plans. I was already scheduled off. I wouldn’t have missed this for nothing.” She looked like a cute little mouse standing there, blushing, turning colors like a prism, holding a half-bitten cracker up to her juicy lips. Looking up at him with big, dark, doe eyes. Eyes so pretty, he wished he could strip down and swim in them. Eyes he believed in his heart were now ready to see more… A lot more.

Her vibe is right tonight. She’s been thinking. She’s been reading. Studying. She’s opened up more to me about a lot, too. She accepted what I told her about my past, and still wants me. I know about her past decisions, too, and never wavered in my desire for her. At one point in time, we were practically best friends. This woman has always had my heart.

The other day she even told me she wants to go back to law school. They weren’t empty words—she was online looking and began making calls and sending emails. That was always her dream, and I want her to have it—but never feel as if I’m pushing her into doing anything. Into being anything she doesn’t want to be. I want the soul of the person I met ten years ago. It’s still there, just wiser now. I want the fucking best for this woman, even if that isn’t me, but I know damn well that it is. Yeah, it’s time. She’s ready…

He leaned forward and caressed her chin, then her cheek.

“Nadia, you’re so damn real, you know that? And so beautiful. I just love everything about you, girl.”

Their eyes hooked, but then she abruptly turned her back to him, barreling towards his refrigerator. She slipped a bottle of Gatorade out, broke the seal, and stood there, now facing him again. Staring him down. Gulping. He watched her throat move. Constricting. Her cheeks compressed as she guzzled the clear liquid. Holding the bottle around the thick center like a dick. She swayed ever so slightly… pirouetting slowly. Barely moving. She had complete, measured control of her body. It was a thing to see, a sight to behold. An unhurried, enchanting dance. She moved like a liquid whisper. Her eyes were full of black smoke and choked him in hot, seductive flames. Her body, her mind and her electric vibe put him in mind of a seductress, a seasoned snake charmer, and he was definitely rising to the occasion.
