He should’ve known better.

“Ready for the show anytime now,” I heard Wizard call.

I gritted my teeth. “I need your answer, Athena.”

Her eyes studied mine for a long few seconds before she once again fitted her body to mine. She wrapped her arms around my neck she spoke next.

“Is that a flashlight or are you happy to see me?” She batted her eyelashes at me.

I caught her chin in my hand, turning her face so we were eye to eye. “I’m deathly allergic to bees. I have to carry an EpiPen with me everywhere I go.”

She deflated. “Oh. I have bees in my backyard. Don’t ever go back there.”

I twisted my hips and let her feel my erection—which I’d been carefully keeping away from her before now. “Yes, ma’am.”

Her breath caught, and she blinked at me with those warm brown eyes.

I loved her eyes.

I loved even more the way I felt when those eyes were focused on me.

“Are you sure about this?” I asked.

She licked her lips before saying, “Whatever you need me to do without blowing your cover.”

My hand trailed down the length of her side, fingers grazing skin a whole lot faster than should’ve been possible.

“Close your eyes, honey,” I said when I saw her glance frantically around the bar the moment my hand met skin.

All I’m saying is don’t give me a severe thunderstorm warning without delivering.

—Athena’s secret thoughts

ATHENA

My heart was pounding inside my chest.

Had it been anyone else, I would’ve run out of there, my purse gun at my side ready to take out whomever followed me.

But this was Gable.

I wouldn’t blow his cover.

And I wanted him exactly where he was, taking these fuckers out and making it impossible for them to keep abducting women and children.

No, I would do this, even if it was territory I’d never ventured to before.

“Close your eyes, honey,” Gable urged, misinterpreting my glancing around for nervousness rather than anger.

There were quite a few members of the club watching.

I could see the men Gable had been sitting with—yes, I’d clocked the group, but not who sat amongst the men at the table—when I’d come out onto the dance floor.

Both the men sitting at that table were staring at me with gleaming eyes.

The man who’d asked me—and threatened me later—was on a bar stool with a few other men from the club.

There were other people in the bar who were paying attention, but not nearly as many blatantly watching like the club members themselves.

It was like they knew a good show was about to be on display.

“Eyes. On. Me.”

I turned my gaze to him and said, “What?”

“Keep your eyes on mine,” he said, backing me up until my backside hit a bar stool in the corner.

The corner was in the back of the bar, but that didn’t mean the back of the bar had a hidden alcove or anything.

No, you could see even better than in the front of the bar because there was a stage and stage lights. Even though the stage wasn’t currently in use, the lights were still on.

Displaying the stage, and about five feet on either side of the stage.

Where he backed me up against the wall, they’d be able to see everything.

My heart started pounding harder as the realization of what I was about to do hit me.

“Last chance,” he rumbled. “I’ll get you out of here if you’re unsure.”

I reached up and threaded my fingers into his overly long hair.

I’d never seen him look so unkempt before.

He always looked so much like a cop to me.

Close-cropped hair.

Mustache.

And absolutely never a beard.

I didn’t think I’d ever seen him with a five o’clock shadow.

I liked the new look.

Even though I could tell he hated it.

“Gable,” I whispered, pulling him closer and shifting my hips against him. “I can think of worse ways to spend my night.”

I’d wanted him since I’d seen him the first time.

The only thing that’d kept me away from him was the way he looked so standoffish anytime I went close to him. Had he given me one sign that he was interested, I might’ve pursued something with him.

I mean, he was hot.

He was also a good man.

“Fuck,” he loosed a breath that blew across my collar bone.

It made my nipples pebble.

I shivered as his hands once again went to the short dress I was wearing, and this time went up higher.

His fingers hit my boy short underwear and paused.

“I was expecting a thong,” he growled as he traced the lines of my panties from my hip to my inner ass cheek.

His fingers paused there, cupping my entire cheek, and I groaned.

His eyes flashed to mine, and the intensity in them sent my knees quaking.

I mean, logically, I knew he wanted me.

I could feel that want pressed against my right hip.

But I wasn’t sure it took much to want someone—at least sexually.
