"I sent him away," I admit once Mario sets the pages down on the small table once more. "I'm not angry at him, I'm..."
"It's not an easy thing to go through," he says. "When you feel as if your life is about to change so drastically, it's difficult to comprehend. For anyone." Mario takes my hand, lifting my knuckles to his lips. He presses a soft kiss to them before he smiles. "Enzo isn't going anywhere. No matter how many times you send him away. The man is as stubborn as a mule. I've known him his whole life, and once he's committed, he follows through."
"I think I've fallen in love with him," I confess, still unsure of how to navigate these feelings. It happened slowly, over the past weeks. And as we head closer to the wedding, I realize that I want this.
"I know you have." Mario chuckles when my mouth pops open at his words. "It's so clear to see. He has changed. At least, around you he's different. And it's refreshing to see him care about someone so much."
"I wanted to hate him, so much. Maybe, I’m weak. He is meant to be my enemy," I whisper as I lie back, realizing that everything I've ever known is changing. I agreed that I'm Enzo's and I don't regret it. He's taken my heart, he's claimed my body, and I finally feel...happy. "I should apologize to him."
Mario nods, as if he was expecting me to say those words. "I'll get him. He's been in the waiting room, pacing back and forth like a caged animal since you told him to leave."
This makes me smile, the first time I've allowed myself to feel happy since the accident. I can't do this alone. "Thank you for being here."
"Where else would I be?" Mario challenges. "And you should sign this." He taps the document waiting for my consent. "We want you healthy and home." He makes his way out of the room and it's as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. There's a long road ahead, depending on what the outcome of the surgery will be, but with my new family by my side, I can make it.
The click of the door catches my attention, and there, on the threshold, waiting tentatively for me to say something, is the man I love.
Chapter 32
Enzo
"Enzo," she whispers, and my heart stutters. It fucking stutters against my ribs before stalling for a second. My feet have a mind of their own as I rush to her. "I'm sorry."
"Don't you dare fucking apologize for being emotional," I whisper, my fingers brushing her hair out of her face. She's so beautiful. So fucking perfect, even here in a goddamned hospital bed. "I'm working on finding the bastard who did this."
"I just need you," she says, her voice soft, calm, and pained. "I have to make a decision. And it needs to be quick."
I nod slowly. "If it's to make you better, than I approve. I'll sign the damn thing, if need be," I tell her because it's true. I want her to dance again. I know she can. There is no doubt that this girl is everything, she's far stronger than most of my men put together.
"I shouldn't have sent you away," Luna admits slowly, our hands interlocking, our fingers tangling. I lean in and press my lips to hers and tell her silently how much I love her. I haven't told her the words yet, I've been waiting for the right time, and perhaps this is it.
"Boss," Mario's voice comes from behind me. "We've found him."
"Bring him to the warehouse," I tell him, but keep my eye son Luna. "Make sure he's secure. I'll be there within the hour." My girl's eyes are wide. She knows what's coming. There's no doubt in her mind that the man in question will be tortured while being questioned. But I already know who oversaw the hit on her. Tommaso's words to me had sealed my confidence in the fact that he ordered this bastard to kill Luna. And he will pay.
"Come back to me," Luna tells me as I pull the pen from my pocket, handing it to her which she accepts. I watch her sign the consent form. She's going into surgery while I go kill a man.
I won't be focused on him, only making him pay. And the thought of her having to go through this has the fire in my veins simmering. My thoughts are filled with what I'm going to do to him, while I smile as his screams fill the warehouse. I'll make sure he sings sweetly for me, as I peel the skin from his body. Inch by fucking inch.
"All you need to worry about is coming home to me," I tell Luna when she hands me back the pen. I take her hands in mine, our fingers tangling together. For the first time in my life, my dead heart awakens, filling with an emotion that scares the fuck out of me.
