“If they needed assistance in apprehending a perpetrator, our senses and speed came in handy in their investigations and arrests, and our…disposal of criminals helped to keep jails from becoming overcrowded. The police force turns a blind eye towards vampires, and we do not answer to them. So they would not involve themselves in our plight.”

So, he wasn’t worried about police officers finding out about vampires. He just knew they wouldn’t be useful because they don’t involve themselves with vampires because they eat criminals. Interesting.

It was also interesting how unaffected I was by the news. I supposed after digging my immortal, eternal soulmate out of the ground, nothing shocked me. Still, the lack of police help posed a problem. “What can we do about your father?”

“We will think of something,” he replied with a shrug. “For now, I want you to tell me about your father.”

After hearing about Viggo’s dad, my father seemed like fucking Santa Claus in comparison. It felt wrong even complaining, but I appreciated his concern. I gave him a quick version of, “Eh, he was just a dick. He didn’t want a gay son, so he kicked me out of his house and his life. At least I was already over eighteen when it happened.”

“Age does not matter,” Viggo replied sadly. “It is always difficult when family turns their back on you, and I'm very sorry you went through that.”

“Thank you. My father and I were never super close; we butted heads a lot. But it still stung when he wrote me off. I went a little wild; I jumped into a rebellious, slutty streak.” I flinched at the admission but thankfully, Viggo didn't seem to understand what I meant by slutty. I wasn't sure he could handle it.

But it was true; like Viggo, I kept my orientation secret from my dad for years because I was afraid of his reaction. But I finally reached a point where I just couldn't hide anymore. When my truth came out and my father acted exactly as I thought he would by kicking me out and pushing me away, I had nothing holding me back. I experimented and lived my gay life to the fullest, which basically meant sleeping with anyone with a dick.

At first, my sexual conquests were fun and exhilarating, and a metaphorical middle finger to my dad. Then they became a distraction from the emotional connections and relationships I was missing. They were a Band-aid for missing love, but it turns out I needed stitches.

Wanting to lighten the mood, I looked up towards my forehead and added, “That's also when I dyed my hair blue. It was meant to be a temporary rebellion, since my dad would never let me do it, but I liked it and ended up keeping the color.”

Viggo smiled and ran his fingers through my locks. “When I first saw you, I thought you looked like a fairy.”

I slapped away his hand and gave him a death glare, making him recoil. He may be a strong, deadly vampire, but I could give one hell of a mean mug. “What is wrong with you? You're talking about love and soulmates and then you come at me with that shit?”

“I meant no offense,” he insisted as he reached for my hand, but I swatted it away.

“How is that not offensive?”

His eyes bounced back and forth between mine as he quickly explained, “Fairies are known for their beauty and vibrant colors. When I saw your lovely blue hair against your fair skin, the creatures’ features came to mind.”

I blinked and let out a relieved sigh as realization hit me. “You meant an actual fairy.” That wasn’t the first thing I suspected, since I didn’t know the creatures actually existed.

Viggo nodded. “But I never meant to upset you. I do not wish you to be fae; I want you just the way you are. And you don’t need to worry; any fairy beauty is lost on me. The only being I will ever have eyes for is you, beloved one.”

His sweet words made me feel like an ass, and I needed to explain as I took his hand, “I thought you were making fun of me. Nowadays, people use the word as a rude way to describe a man who…isn’t very manly, to put it nicely. I’m sorry I assumed that of you; it’s just that I’ve heard it a lot.”

“I would never!” Viggo kissed my knuckles once more before insisting, “But I need the names of the people who have called you this terrible name.”

“You got a pencil?” I teased. “It’s a long list.”

“I have a very good memory,” he answered gruffly. So did I; aside from strangers, I probably remembered every person who made fun of me. I had a feeling that holding grudges was something Viggo and I had in common.
