Oh, and the summer I tried to grow out an undercut I gave myself and couldn’t put my hair up without it sticking out like a badly trimmed shrubbery.

“So why aren’t you a full stylist yet?” asks Lace, sitting on the sink counter letting her legs swing.

“Because I work at my mom’s salon and she never thinks I’m ready. All her clients have been going there for decades and nobody wants a new stylist. Even when I do get to fill in for someone, it’s just a bunch of old ladies who need their roots touched up or a wash and a blowout.”

“Sounds boring as fuck,” Indie says.

The other girls agree.

“That's why I was interviewing at Haunted Ink in the first place. I looked for something that I was qualified for but would be totally different. More exciting. I just got more than I bargained for. I guess you all have more interesting lives.”

Lace shrugs. “I ran away from home. Didn't finish high school. This place is fun, and the guys treat us pretty good, but it’s not a forever gig. Sluts pretty much never actually end up an old lady. Jewel got really lucky hooking up with Chef right away.”

Kaia nods. “I needed a place to hide from my ex for a while. He wouldn’t dare come in here. It’s usually safe, but I saw you there when that asshole prospect tried to make me blow him. Even if the guys deal with it afterwards, shit still happens sometimes.”

“I never liked that guy,” Indie says with a frown. “Him and Mad Dog are bad news. I bet they don’t get voted in.” Lace and Kaia nod.

“Why?” I wash the toner out of Lace’s hair and it looks much better already. “You should use a purple shampoo to keep the yellow tint out, but the color is still pretty flat. If we had a slightly darker blonde I could make it look more natural.”

“I don’t know. There’s just a vibe. Being a prospect for the Screaming Eagles is a big deal and they’re always acting like they’re better than everyone else. Who’s Deuce’s sponsor?”

“I think it was Cannon,” Indie answers.

“The guy who moved out?”

“Yeah.”

“I don’t fucking like this,” I growl, staring at the security screen.

Blade nods. “It’s awfully convenient that the most recognisable asshole from Kaylee’s description shows up at our fucking gate the day we’re meeting with the Giordanos.”

I press the intercom button. “What the fuck do you want?”

The scarred biker looks around and shoves his hands in his pockets. “You really want me talking about it out here? I’ve got shit you’ll want to hear.”

“What’s the catch?”

“Asylum and then safe passage to somewhere way the fuck away from here.”

“Reaper. Go get King, Nitro and Kaylee. If you can’t find King, get as many fucking officers as you can.”

He nods. “On it.”

He’s already pulling his phone out of his pocket as he runs from the watchpost to the clubhouse. I wasn’t sure about him at first, but unlike Mad Dog who started out strong and seems to be sliding, Reaper’s growing on me.

“Let’s bring him in and see what he has to say.” Blade presses the button and leans towards the mic. “We can’t fucking give that to you on the spot and you know it, but you can come in and say your fucking piece.”

The guy doesn’t look happy, but he nods. “Fine.”

I click the safety off my gun and adjust the holster under my cut to make sure I can get it out fast. Blade taps several spots on his clothes, probably double checking the knives he never leaves behind.

We let him in, and I glare at the fucker until he looks away. He looks like he could belong to an MC, even if he isn’t ours. Jeans, motorcycle boots, jean jacket with a leather vest over it. Blue bandanna. Almost like a costume, if you ask me. Just a little too fucking on point. He's built strong, though, and some fucker did a number on his face at some time in his past. Vicious scars cover a good half of it, continuing down his neck, like someone tried to carve his skin off and only half failed to do it.

Reaper comes out of the clubhouse with King, Hero, Wraith, Nitro and Kaylee. She takes one look and stops in her tracks. “It's him,” she whispers, pale blue eyes wide and scared.

Members are starting to notice something’s up and are casually moving to the opening of the garage to get a view. News is gonna travel fast.

It’s tempting to kill this asshole on the spot for scaring our girl, but if things hadn’t gone down the way they did, we never would’ve seen her again after that fucking interview.

“You’ve got balls showing up here. I’ll give you that.” King gives him a once over, turns his head and spits on the ground. “Talk.”
