“You don’t suck at it. If we hadn’t done it this way, you wouldn’t be Lincoln, and I happen to like Lincoln very much.” He grinned and then dropped his voice. “Lincoln is a good, good boy who might just earn himself a reward when we’re done here.”

“I get to blow you somewhere public where we risk getting caught?” I joked.

His brows pulled together. “You really wanna do that?”

I shrugged. “Yeah…I mean, duh.”

“God, I have the best boyfriend ever. You’re fucking perfect. But no. I was thinking we could go to Jockstrap Monday tonight.”

“Ooh! That’s just as good. Okay, well, not just as good because your cock isn’t involved, but yes, I accept. Let’s go meet Trey!” I grabbed his hand and began tugging him as Rush laughed, following easily. This was an important moment for me. Rush and Trey were both important to me in different ways, and introducing Rush to Trey made it real. People knew about us, and we’d been dating for weeks now, but this was more than our group of friends. I was showing Rush a different side of myself. “He’s a great kid. You’ll love him. And he’s doing well too. He’s going to be fine. I know it.”

“I have no doubt he’s a great kid, since you like him so much.”

God, he was so sweet and just…everything. I had the best boyfriend ever.

We entered the hospital, checked in, and I said hi to a few people while we walked. When we got to the pediatric oncology unit, we had to get buzzed in.

“Hey, Lincoln! How’s it going?” one of the nurses asked.

“Hi, Janet. We were just coming in to see Trey.” Her eyes darted to Rush. “This is my boyfriend, Rush. Rush, this is Janet, one of my favorite nurses.” She was awesome with the kids. I wasn’t sure I could be a peds oncology nurse.

“Hi. It’s great to meet you.” Rush shook her hand, and she told him the same. We spoke for a minute before she had to move on.

She raised a hand to shield her face from Rush and mouthed, “Hot.”

“I know, right?” I replied, and she laughed.

“What was that?” Rush asked.

“She was just telling me how sexy my boyfriend is.”

“Well…she’s not wrong. I like Janet. We should hang out with her more often.”

I laughed and led him toward Trey’s room. Before going in, we stopped and sanitized our hands. “He just got back yesterday for his next round of chemo, so he might be a little tired.”

Rush nodded, and not gonna lie, he looked a bit nervous. I pushed up onto my toes and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. “You’ll be fine, baby.”

“Thanks. I didn’t realize I was nervous until just now.”

I patted his stomach because…well, it was a nice set of abs, and then we knocked and went inside. Trey was curled up on his side on the bed, but the moment his eyes landed on Rush, he scrambled into a sitting position, his mouth hanging open a bit.

“Hey! You never look that excited to see me!” I teased.

“You’re… Dad, it’s…” Trey stumbled over his words, which was when I noticed his dad sitting on a chair in the corner of the room.

“Holy shit. You’re Rush Alexander,” Trey’s dad, Tyson, said, and damned if Rush’s cheeks didn’t turn pink.

Rush nodded at Tyson but moved toward Trey first, and if I hadn’t loved him already, I would have fallen right then and there. “Hi, Trey. It’s really great to finally meet you. Lincoln has told me a lot about you.”

“He has?” Trey asked as though he was in awe of the fact that I spoke about him.

“Of course I did, silly. You’re one of my very best friends.”

“It’s true,” Rush told him as they shook hands.

“Thank you… I… Lincoln is the best friend I’ve ever had,” Trey replied, and damned if my heart didn’t soften even more. What were all these people doing to me? I’d spent so many years of my life trying not to feel anything, and they were all changing that.

“He’s a good one to have,” Rush replied. “He’s my best friend too.” He then addressed Tyson. “Hi, I’m Linc’s boyfriend, Rush. I hope you don’t mind that I came to visit with him today.”

Tyson shook his head. “No, not at all. I’m freaking out a little. I’m Tyson Goldman.”

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Goldman.”

He chuckled deeply. “Please, just Tyson.”

They spoke for a minute, and I got close to Trey, who said softly, “Oh my God. He’s here! You really brought him to see me!”

“Of course I did. He really wanted to come as well. How are you feeling?” I rubbed his hand.

“A lot better now,” he replied.

“If you guys don’t mind, I’ll go downstairs and get some lunch and give you some time to visit,” Tyson said. He looked tired, his shoulders sagging briefly, and my stomach sank, wondering if they had gotten bad news.
