Looking out over the yard again, she marveled at the two men in her life, running carefree through the yard. How had she ever thought she could find this with someone like Carter Wray? A part of her found a sadness in how things had unfolded with him, how things had ended, but it wasn’t anything she had control over. He had made his choices and they had resulted in his demise.

King was nothing like him. For every hateful and selfish word out of Carter’s mouth, King had only kindness and gentleness. He was a bit of a marvel, really. Many people in this town viewed him as the ruthless leader of a local biker gang, but they were always the people that saw him from afar.

Those who knew him personally saw only a quiet, thoughtful man. He could be firm, and he could be brutal if warranted, lethal even, as she had discovered, but overall, he wanted only good things for people. If his ire was raised, it was usually by people who were unkind to others in some way.

Still, there were people that only believe in that side of him. They knew nothing of the wolf shifters in their midst that quite often protected them from things they were not even aware of. They knew nothing of the numerous ways his motorcycle club benefited a number of townspeople, providing anonymous funds for illness, little league uniforms and school supplies for those who couldn’t afford them.

They built playgrounds and purchased shoes for teachers who told them of students in need. Coats were commonly found abandoned on coat racks frequented by children who were cold. Their benefit to the community went mostly unnoticed.

And here she sat, upon the same hill that King had sat upon as a child growing up, looking down upon the people below. Had it been like this for his father? Had he started out this way and become something else in this ivory tower? Jo didn’t want to think of things that way, but she couldn’t help but wonder if there was any part of his monster within his son and if there was any of that same monster in their son, a dark thread that would shine through at a later time.

She shook the darks thoughts free of her head and went back to watching the pair play, carefree, in the yard in front of her. She couldn’t imagine them being anything other than the sweet souls they were. They were nothing short of beautiful and with them by her side, life was just as beautiful as them.
