Anyway, Reign just got drafted to a team in Florida, but he’s visiting for a couple of days. And since he knows most of these guys, he was invited.

“If you don’t know how to knock up a girl, I don’t know if we should be having this conversation.”

He gives me the finger. Then, with a frown, “I mean, how the fuck did you do it so fast? And with twins no less.”

My lips twitch. “Why, you looking to get your girl knocked up?”

His frown thickens. “I shouldn’t.”

“Yeah? Why not?”

“She’s only eighteen, dumbass.”

“So?”

“And she’s in college.”

I tip my bottle toward him. “You barely got out of college.”

“But she just started. She has goals. And I’m supposed to be a good boyfriend and support those goals. I shouldn’t be thinking about…” he trails off in a grimace.

My lips twitch harder. “Thinking about what?”

“Planting my baby in her. Seeing her all,” his eyes glaze as if he’s actually imagining it right now, “soft and round. All mine.”

“Well,” I tell him, trying not to laugh. “She already is yours.”

He comes back to the moment with a sigh. “Yeah, but not like that.”

I know what he’s saying. I know what he means.

I felt that too.

In fact I still feel it. And I have knocked her up. With twins no less.

But then again, I have done other things too, haven’t I?

Other despicable things.

Which means that she’s not mine. Even if I wanted her to be. Even if she wanted to be.

“And it’s gotten worse now,” he says.

“Ever since you moved away.”

“Yeah.” He shakes his head. “We’re trying to get her to move down to Florida, but it won’t be until next semester, so yeah.”

Sighing, I put him out of his misery. “It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Pregnancy is hard.” He’s listening raptly so I go on, “It was fucking torture, man. Those first few months. She was throwing up left and right, couldn’t keep anything down. She’d cry just like that. Weird smells knocked her off her ass. Her boobs hurt. Jesus,” I shake my head, “and the worst part was that I couldn’t do anything. They say ginger helps but it did jackshit for her. She couldn’t even keep water down, lost so much weight. And all I could do was stand there and pull her hair back while she emptied her stomach.”

“Holy fuck,” Reign goes.

“So you better think really long and hard before you do something drastic,” I tell him. “In fact, the moment you get the urge to go bareback and knock her up, you go for a run. You work out. You run drills. You drink yourself to sleep. You do whatever you can to fight the urge. And you support her, you hear me? In all her goals. Do what she says. Give her what she wants. Treat her like she’s your queen and don’t be a selfish dick.”

Before Reign can respond, someone else joins our little two-some.

Riot Rivera.

One of my only friends on the team and a striker like me.

“What are we talking about?” he asks, settling himself on the couch with a beer of his own.

Reign turns to him. “Ledge over here is giving out love advice.”

Riot’s eyes go wide. “For real?”

“Yup.”

“Let me guess, it all has to do with having a big dick and knowing how to use it.”

Reign chuckles. “Apparently not. Apparently, our legendary lover boy does have some pointers about how to be in a relationship.”

Riot pauses sipping on his beer and look at me like he’s so fucking surprised. “You’re shitting me.”

Reign’s lips twitch. “Nope.”

“But he did slip his dick in the conversation at least once, right?”

“Not once.”

“Holy fuck,” he breathes much like Reign had done only a few moments before.

“You talk to your daughter with that mouth, asshole?” I address Riot.

Who has the audacity to chuckle. “No, I do wash my mouth out before talking to my daughter whenever I curse. Don’t worry, I’ll teach you when you have yours.”

I flip him the bird, which only makes him chuckle more.

Like me, Riot is also new to the team. But of course, he wasn’t the last pick like I was. In fact, he was one of the first ones. With his soccer player Puerto Rican father and uncles, soccer practically flows in his veins. Although for a while there it looked like he might not be able to make any team or go pro. Because a one-night stand he’d had in college ended up pregnant — without his knowledge — and dumped the baby on him. There’s a lot of drama involved, including her trying to get money from him in exchange for the baby, threatening him to go to the press and whatnot.

But in any case, I’m glad he ended up here or I’d hate literally everyone on the team.

Which is not a problem for me, but having a friendly face is nice.
