“Wanted to tell you something, if now's a good time,” I say, matching her volume.

“Before they get back to finding the murderer,” Renee says.

“Okay.” There's a short phone call on the screen. “I, uh, I like kissing you.”

Renee snorts, then starts laughing. She laughs even harder through the next scene, when the hero and heroine are trying to find the city's scariest killer, now with the extra information they got from the house where the last murder had taken place.

“How do you do that?” she asks, her voice shaky like she might start laughing again.

I can't take my eyes off her.

“Do what?” I ask, my voice low.

Renee takes a breath, then turns and finds me watching. Her eyes move slowly over my face, down to my lips and back up again. Her breath catches.

“Make me feel like...” Her eyes stay on my face for a few beats more. In the light from the drive-in screen, I can see Renee's face flushing a deeper red. She glances away, biting her lip. “I don't know.”

I shuffle myself toward the screen and pretend to watch the movie. I'm actually looking at her, just in my peripheral vision. Her arm presses against mine on the center console.

“Like what?” I ask.

She's quiet for long enough that I have to look over at her without hiding it. Renee's eyes meet mine, and she shakes her head. The tension between us is thick. It doesn't even matter that she's holding a bag of popcorn that's two-thirds full. I wouldn't care if the whole thing tipped over and got everywhere. That's how much I want her in my arms.

Slowly, holding my breath, I move my arm against hers.

Renee doesn't pull away. Her breath gets a little quicker and shallower. I get another breath of her scent and it takes effort not to stroke her hair back from her face.

Instead I take her hand in mine. My hand is bigger than hers, but when I thread our fingers together, they fit perfectly.

Renee looks down our hands, then back up into my eyes.

“Do you want to come to my place after?” I ask.

She lets out a breath like she's been waiting for me to ask her that question all night. Damn—did I screw up again? Should I have asked her before we drove all the way here?

I decide it doesn't matter because Renee looks at me and nods.

“Yeah,” she says, and sits up, gives me a kiss on the cheek, all the while holding that bag of popcorn steady without moving her hand from mine. “I do.”

Renee

Griffin holds my hand all the way to his house, running soothing circles over my knuckles with the pad of his thumb. It's not too far from my apartment in a little neighborhood that reminds me of my aunt's. By the time we get there, I'm not thinking about my aunt at all. I'm not thinking about anything but how strong his hand feels around mine. I wanted him so much when we were at the drive-in; I want him to take me away from reality and we can get lost together, tangled in sheets this time instead of the bar.

I just want to forget and pretend with him.

He gets out of the car and jogs around to the passenger side. It makes me laugh. He doesn’t have to do that. He’s too damn nice. Griffin smiles when he opens the door for me, and I can’t help but to smile back. He takes my hand in his and helps me out, and then we're both in a cold breeze that feels even colder now that it's dark out.

The butterflies in the pit of my stomach flutter like crazy as he walks beside me and hustles me in and out of the cold. I feel like I'm getting away with something on the way to his front door. He pulls out a key, unlocks the door, and pulls me inside. I can’t stop looking at him. His five o’clock shadow is handsome and looks perfect on his sharp jaw.

His entryway is neat and small, and that's all I see of it before he pushes me back against the door and kisses me. My coat is half way off and he helps me the rest of the way as I moan and suck his bottom lip. He smiles against my lips and then kisses me again, deeper this time.

“Renee,” he groans my name, in a low sexy voice. I love it. I’m lost in the way he craves me.

I push at his coat first and then his button down. His hands move up my sweater dress and our clothes fall to the floor in a puddle beneath us. All the while my breath quickens, and I can’t stop kissing him. He can’t stop kissing me either.
