“Our man on the inside is ready. This is our third bust and seizure. The other agencies are failing at every turn. They’re pissed and pointing fingers.”
Robbie looks at everyone. “The informants and leads are panning out.”
“Nashville is getting stale,” Ace states what we all discussed.
“Agreed.” Finn jerks his chin. “What are you thinking?”
“We need to get back out there.”
“Who’s we?”
Ace points to me. “Ford and I are on the road. Major and Talon stay back and work what we find.”
Talon grunts, unhappy with being sidelined.
“Major’s a given, but how’d you get shafted?” Robbie questions.
“Because Ace and Ford cheat like motherfuckers.”
“Bullshit, you’re a sore loser,” Ace counters.
“There was no way I lost that hand.”
I grab a tissue and hand it over. “You have a tear in your eye.”
He swats it away, his frown curling up. “Just remember who will be in the house with your woman on all those lonely nights.”
There’s a collective chuckle. “Find your own woman.”
“I like the one you have.”
“Before you go to blows, I think Talon needs to join in. There’s a group outside of Memphis I want you guys to meet. One of them is a retired Marine who is part of a motorcycle club. He and his guys roam the roads frequently. Something piqued his curiosity, and he reached out to Dad. This shouldn’t take more than a few days.”
Talon’s face lights up. “This means we get to ride?”
“Yeah.”
“Hell yeah.” Talon slaps his hands together. “Looks like the boys are back in action. I mean, without Daddy-O over here.”
“I’m in,” Major surprises us all, and before we can question, he explains, “Margo is dying to get back here. I’ll arrange for her to be with Jewls.”
“You sure?” Robbie quirks an eyebrow.
“It’s a few days and I won’t be far. Plus, it gets me out of furniture shopping.”
We all nod in understanding. Jewls is determined to fill every room in their house.
“Head out on Monday. I’ll plan and send the information. Thanks for coming in on a Saturday night. Sorry if I messed up your plans with your mom.”
“Mom wasn’t fazed. She’s with Amanda and Sandy,” I reply, grateful Harley and Ace’s moms were around when I had to cancel.
“After your trip, we’ll regroup. Dad’s connection may be a bust, but it’s worth a shot. We have to stay diligent. The leak is still out there. You guys concentrate and work the lead in Memphis. We’ll take care of things here.”
Robbie’s meaning is crystal clear. He’ll watch out for the women while we are all gone.
“Girls are still out,” Major announces, studying his phone.
“You stalking again? Jewls will have your balls.” Talon tsks with the click of his tongue.
“No asshole, the app notified me.”
“She still holding a grudge?” Finn asks in amusement. “Few men have the guts to trade in their wives’ car and put her in a Tahoe.”
“My ass is not driving my kids around in a fucking sedan, and Jewls isn’t driving my truck.”
“I get ya, brother. Although I don’t know how Jewls is hanging with the women. Ember can hardly make it past nine these days.”
“She pretends to be a badass, but she took a three-hour nap today to prepare.”
“Better get sleep now, because your life is about to change. You have no idea.” Robbie and Finn both nod at Major, who’s completely unaffected.
I check my watch and see it’s almost midnight.
“That app tell you their location?” I point to Major’s phone.
“Yes.”
“Given the time, my guess is everyone but Jewls is shitfaced. My sisters will keep the party going all night. Time to intervene.”
“Brave man interrupting girls’ night out.” Talon whistles low. “Never thought I’d see the day Ford Whitman was pussy-whipped.”
“It’s a disease.” Finn grins.
I check with Ace and Major, who both share the same expression.
“Let’s roll.”
Barbaric…
The woman thought I was barbaric before she left. She has no idea.
Next time, I will handcuff her ass to me.
My jaw locks tight, and I pause to calm the possessive brute threatening inside.
“Oh shit,” Talon hisses, stepping up. “Remember, we carry a badge.”
At this moment, I don’t give a fuck.
Across the room, Rowan sits at a bar table with the others spread out around her. She’s talking rapidly, her hands flying, her body bouncing in the seat.
The man across from her is glued to her words with rabid interest.
Collin Bates.
Software engineer, self-made millionaire, and Tera Sails’ ex-boyfriend.
Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Harley shift in her seat, then freeze. Her body stiffens and her mouth drops. She nudges Jewls, who turns and has the same reaction.
It’s a look I’ve seen twice before.
Once in the dead of night on the edge of my property, and once in the parking garage of an upscale condo.
Shock, denial, and resolve, followed by an undeniable conclusion.
They’re caught.
“The sprockets appear mighty guilty. Can Jewls wrestle with that stomach?”
