She didn’t recognize the voice, but she also heard commotion.
“This isn’t over. You will fucking die.”
The bathroom doors opened and Roman ran in. Her assailant took off, and she didn’t get to see where he went as Roman rushed toward her side. Dropping the piece of glass, she collapsed to the ground and shook as Roman came to her.
Antonio, Marlo, and Cash were there, as were Lucas and Liam, but tears filled her eyes, and the only person she wanted was Roman.
Wrapping her arms around him, she held on to him tightly, not wanting to let him go.
Chapter Fourteen
“We’re no closer to finding out what happened,” Roman said.
The moments after the attack, Lucas Greco had ordered his home to be put on lockdown. No one could get in or out, but it didn’t matter. Roman knew the bastard had already made it out and alive, which pissed him off. They had checked the security videos. Seconds after Alex entered the bathroom, the feeds were turned off. No one knew who it was, or if he had been waiting for her.
“Roman, it’s okay,” Alex said.
They all stood in Lucas’s office. Marlo was inspecting Alex’s head. The doctor had already given her the all-clear. She might have a concussion, so tonight, Roman had to keep waking her every so many hours.
Marlo had been tasked with removing pieces of glass that were in her hair as he was the only one who had been trained to do so.
“No, it’s not okay,” Roman said. He turned toward Liam. “You were supposed to be watching her.”
“I was, but in case you didn’t notice, men cannot follow women into the bathroom. It is unseemly, or so I’ve been told.” Liam looked toward Lucas.
“I had complaints that you were randomly inspecting bathrooms.”
“You think I don’t know when people are going to attack and the best places to do it? This means whoever did this heard our argument,” Liam said. “The fucker is close, I can feel it.”
Roman’s hands clenched. Whoever it was had them fucking chasing them. Alex could have died.
He’d been passing the bathroom when he heard the commotion, and it was only because he recognized Alex’s voice, her pained scream from the last time she was shot, that he knew she was being attacked. He needed someone to hit, badly.
No, he needed someone to fucking kill.
And so far, they had let everyone from the party leave as they didn’t have a reason to keep them. After checking everything, each guest leaving the building had been asked to present their hands. No one showed signs of bleeding. The piece of glass Alex used had been taken and was currently being transported for testing. They didn’t know if it would be viable though.
Alex said she had cut him, but she didn’t know if the blood on the glass was hers or her attacker’s.
Everything had gotten so fucked.
He ran fingers through his hair and paced the length of the room.
“You took one heck of a hit,” Marlo said.
“Tell me about it.”
“We know the guy is strong,” Cash said. “That’s new.”
“Of course, he would be strong,” Lucas said. “He’s messing with the Greco and Smith alliance. Only a fool wouldn’t be strong enough to take us on.”
“Not necessarily,” Antonio said. “Alex’s attacker could be foolish, but he has to be smart.”
“No, anyone who dares to attack my daughter is foolish. They must know I will kill anyone who ever threatens her,” Liam said.
“Of course, they know, and that is what they’re counting on. Whoever is doing this, Alex is the primary target,” Antonio said. “I think the main threat is the Smith and Greco alliance, and this just confirms it.”
“Because whoever it was that attacked at this party knows of the Greco and Smith alliance. They had perfect opportunity to take out Liam and Lucas themselves, but instead, went after a woman,” Roman said. “We knew she was the target.”
“And we only looked at the cameras in front of the bathroom. Why not check the cameras in the main hall, as well as the corridors, of the whole house?” Antonio asked.
“Do you have any idea how much time that will take?” Lucas asked.
“Alex’s life is in danger now,” Liam said.
“And let’s not forget my attacker is injured,” Alex said.
“We’ve already checked everyone.”
“He left out of the bathroom window, didn’t he? That’s the exit, right?” Alex asked. “He still had to get in, so why don’t you check all the faces in the hall to the ones who left? Someone might be unaccounted for.”
“That’s still going to take time,” Lucas said.
“And my life has been in danger for months. Roman will protect me, and I know Antonio, Marlo, and Cash will protect me. Whoever it was didn’t know where I’ve been hiding all this time. The attack was desperate. Just before it, Roman’s ex-girlfriends were in there, talking.”
