“Alex.” He went to touch her, but she pulled away.
“You are causing a scene.”
“No, I’m going to the bathroom. You’re the one causing a scene.” She turned on her heel and moved away from him.
All her life, she accepted her father for everything he was, and yet, he couldn’t accept her for what she wanted. He saw children who were not born of her as strangers. At the moment, they were strangers because he refused to get to know them, but how could he turn his back on them?
Everything was so messed up.
Stepping out of the main hall, she looked for the bathroom. In the end, she had no choice but to ask one of the soldiers standing on guard for the direction of the bathroom.
It was on the second floor, to the right.
She walked inside and found that it was empty.
After going to a stall, she closed the door, flicked the lock into place, and then turned toward the toilet. Once she’d put the lid down, she stood on it and then sat her ass on the back of the toilet seat, keeping her feet on the lid.
Resting her elbows on her knees, she collapsed into her hands and groaned. Arguing with her father always made her feel queasy. It wasn’t a good feeling.
She wanted to cry. If she did, that would smudge her makeup, and she had worked hard to make it look just right. She blew out a breath and tried to calm her nerves, to focus on what was important.
Millie had warned her when it came to those kids, her father and she would never see eye to eye.
She tensed up when she heard the door open and close.
“I don’t know about you ladies, but Antonio is looking so good tonight. I didn’t even care that Roman was there.”
Alex frowned.
“Oh, please, Charlotte, you were trying to get Roman’s attention just as we were.”
Alex could only assume these were Roman’s ex-lovers, and she had locked herself in the bathroom. If she let herself out, all that would do was alert the three women she was there. She didn’t want a confrontation.
After talking with her dad, all she wanted was to be left alone.
Why didn’t the universe see that?
Life was so unfair at times.
“Yeah, I wanted to get his attention to see that he was, you know, completely done with me. He told me to never call him again, but you know Roman.”
“No, what I know is that Roman is the king, and his friends are just like, they’re not as important. If I can get a meal ticket with the big guy, then that is who I am after.”
“Damn, Denise, that sounds so bad.”
“I want money. I want security, and if the guy has a big dick, then that is just a bonus, and we all know what Roman is like in bed. He is fucking amazing. I am going to miss him, but I tell you, his wife, what is her name?”
“Alex.”
She didn’t have a clue who was talking. Their voices all sounded the same.
“Yeah, Alex, that’s her name, she is a rare woman.”
“What do you mean?”
“We’ve just talked to Roman, girls. Come on, you can’t tell me you don’t see it.”
“See what?”
“Roman’s in love. Now, I am jealous because that means no one is going to get that big dick of his, apart from his wife, but I’m actually happy for him, you know? Arranged marriages are supposed to suck, and when I first saw her, she looked a little uptight. Roman couldn’t stand her, and now, he’ll do anything to protect her. It kind of makes me want to stop going for married men and find a man for myself.”
They seemed to go a little quiet, and Alex was shocked.
Whoever it was thought Roman was in love with her. That couldn’t be possible.
Could it?
Climbing off the toilet, Alex moved to the door and stepped out, only, she came face to face with a masked man who shoved her back hard. She hit the metal door, and pain shot up her back.
Hands went to her hair and lifted her, so she used her hands to attempt to block the blow that landed on her face.
She thrust her leg up and tried to kick him. She hit him somewhere in the leg, forcing him to stumble back.
Pain radiated from her back, and as she got to her feet, she was too slow in the damn heels and dress as he grabbed her and threw her across the room, toward the sinks.
A scream fell from her lips as she was thrown, and her head hit the glass mirrors. The impact smashed one of the mirrors.
Her assailant came at her, but she grabbed a shard of glass. As he went to touch her, she sliced right across his hand. He growled. “You fucking bitch.”
