“Why not?”

“I burned the divorce papers.”

“You know they can print and sign some more. The process can begin again.”

“And they’ll all meet a fire, Kyle. I’m not divorcing my wife.”

“Why not?” Kyle tilted his head to the side.

Roman debated lying, or making up some bullshit, but that had gotten him into trouble with Alex, and he wasn’t going to make the same mistake again.

“I love her, Kyle. I’m in love with her and have been for a very some time now, but I fucked up. I made mistakes, and Alex believes the worst of me, but I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I want to help raise you guys. I want to be a … father to you all, or a friend, or whatever you guys need.”

Kyle nodded. “I knew it. I knew you weren’t a bad guy, that shit just got out of hand.”

“Language. I will tell Liam that you need grounding if you continue.”

He chuckled. “How about, you don’t tell Grandpa about my language, and I don’t tell him that you were thinking of sneaking into his daughter’s bedroom.”

“That is a deal, but don’t forget, Alex is my wife.”

“Who is attempting to divorce you.”

“Tit for tat,” Roman said.

Kyle laughed and pulled a key out of his front pocket. “This will help you inside. If Alex attacks you, beats the crap out of you, then I’m telling her you stole it.”

Roman forced a smile to his lips and nodded at the kid. “Good work on that studying.”

Kyle continued to laugh, but Roman tuned him out as he made his way to the front door.

After letting himself inside, he locked the door and posted the key outside the mailbox. He heard Kyle pick it up, and then Roman looked inside the house. There was a light on for the main landing, so all the kids would have something to see if they woke up needing a bathroom break in the middle of the night.

Roman climbed the stairs, keeping his footsteps light and hoping not to disturb the rest of the house.

He couldn’t recall ever having to sneak into a woman’s house before, at least one that ended well.

After making his way down the hall, he stopped at Alex’s bedroom, and then he placed his palm flat on the surface. He didn’t know if she’d be awake, asleep, or waiting on the opposite side with a baseball bat.

He grabbed the handle, gave it a twist, and let himself inside.

Alex was nowhere to be seen.

He listened and heard her in the bathroom, at first, he thought she was singing, but then, he heard the faint sounds of sobs.

Alex was crying.

Now, he was fucking pissed off. Whoever had made her cry was going to pay for it. Anger rushed through his body, and he was ready to fucking kill them all.

He was about to enter the bathroom, when Alex opened the door. Her eyes were red and bloodshot, and tears spilled down her face. Her hair was wet, and she held a towel wrapped around her body.

“Roman?”

“Who made you cry?” he asked. “Tell me and I will go and deal with them, now.”

Alex shook her head. “What the hell are you doing here? You shouldn’t be here.”

“But I am here, Alex. Tell me.” He grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to spin around to face him, and she pushed him away.

“Stop it. You don’t get to pretend with me.”

“I’m not pretending, Alex. I’m being serious. I want to know who made you feel this way?”

“You really want to know?” she asked.

“Yes. I want to take care of it.”

“Then look in a mirror and take care of yourself,” she said.

“I made you cry?”

“Yes. You made me cry. Us made me cry. How useless it was, that is what made me cry.” She glared at him with a death grip on the towel at the apex of her tits.

Roman was a little distracted. For two months, all he had was memories, and they were not enough.

“Alex…” He moved toward her, but she pulled away.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I’m going to win you back.”

She shook her head. “That is impossible.”

“No, it’s not.”

“Roman, sign the divorce papers.”

“Not a chance. Not now. Not knowing that you’re crying because of me.”

“Does that make you feel good or something?” she asked.

“It makes me feel like shit, Alex. I don’t like to see you cry or to know that I’m the cause. I love you too damn much.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not. I won’t lie to you.”

“I can’t believe you.” She shook her head, and he moved toward her, cupping her face.

“You don’t have to believe me, because it is the truth, and I’m not leaving this house, not ever again. I’m not leaving your side, not until you give me a chance.”

“Is this another order your father gave you?” Alex asked.
