“Does it bother you? I can ask my mother to treat you like crap.”

Darcy laughed. “No, it’s fine. I don’t know why we’re so nervous. It’s time other people knew. You will be the alpha one day, and if you have that protective instinct, which clearly you do, then there’s a chance others might get hurt if you can’t control it.”

“I’ll learn to control it.”

“And until then, it’s time for the pack to know.”

Joe wrapped his arms around her and pressed his face against her neck. “At least it means I get to do this.” And he pulled her close.

She felt the hard ridge of his cock pressing against her stomach.

“And it means I don’t have to watch all those young women trying to garner your attention. I can have you all to myself.” She didn’t want to admit but it was hard watching those women approach him, knowing they wanted him. Her own wolf hadn’t been happy at just how close others were getting to him.

Darcy had never felt possessive in her life, but in that moment, she had felt it, and it had been strong.

“Come on, we’ll go and tell Kelly,” Darcy said.

“And then I’ll drop you off at home. I’ve got to go and see a couple of guys and explain everything.”

Chapter Ten

Joe had learned from Wade’s mom that they were camped out at Ryan’s. At first, Wade’s mom hadn’t been too impressed to see him, but the moment he explained what happened, and the fact he was mated to Darcy, she stopped glaring at him and judging him. She told him to inform Wade that when he got home, she was going to kick his ass for being so damn rude.

He would warn his friend, it was the least he could do. His father had told him to tell everyone the truth, and not keep it a secret.

Arriving at Ryan’s house, he didn’t have to wait long before both his friends were at the front door.

“Have you come to humiliate us some more?” Ryan asked.

Joe stepped back and held his hands up. “I know I didn’t act rationally. I get that you hate me right now, but there’s something I’ve got to tell you.”

Ryan snorted but Wade kept his arms folded and listened.

“First, I want to say, you both are lying fucking bastards.”

Wade’s arms came down, and he looked pissed, but Joe didn’t care.

“I’ll get back to that point in a minute. As for what happened at the town square … please, whatever you do, do not talk shit about Darcy. She is my mate. There. You know the truth. Darcy is mine. She is my mate, I love her, and I’m going to be spending the rest of my life with her. That’s why I reacted the way I did. Not that it’s forgivable, because I know it’s not. I don’t know what came over me, just that I couldn’t stand you guys talking shit about my woman, and I needed you to stop.” He took a deep breath. “Hopefully, one day, you guys will realize what it’s like to find your mates, and you’ll understand.”

“Shit, man, I told you something fishy was going on. There was no way our boy reacted that way for no reason,” Ryan said.

Wade agreed. “And why didn’t you tell us this before today? You know we wouldn’t have done that to you, nor would we have done that to Darcy.”

“Darcy was nervous about us coming out as a couple.” He shrugged. “She’s older than me, and you know who my dad is and all that crap. Also, it was kind of nice to sneak around, and you know, just be us and shit.”

There was silence and he looked toward his friends who seemed to be contemplating what he was saying.

“Fair enough. We’re sorry we talked bad about your mate and we won’t do it again. However, why the fuck are we lying bastards when we’re not the ones sneaking around?” Ryan asked.

“He’s got a point. None of us have tried to keep a mate secret.”

Wade and Ryan both shook their heads.

“Simple. Transition night!” He looked between both of his friends.

“Still not seeing the problem,” Wade said.

“No? You don’t know what the problem is, I’ll explain it, it’s quite simple. You both said how amazing and great it was. How you loved it. I fucking hated it. It was painful and it hurt, and I never wanted to go through that kind of shit again. You guys lied. You told me how you loved it and it was a piece of cake. I felt inadequate.”

Wade and Ryan both stared at him, and then they both started to laugh. “Let me guess, because Ryan and I were pretending, and if my memory serves me right, we were talking bullshit, because it was the worst experience of our lives, you’re calling us lying bastards? You think we wanted to be honest about that shit?”
