As he picks up speed, Brodie does things with his body no man his size should be able to do.

He truly is a sight to behold—and I get to play nurse with him later, bandage up his scrapes and bruises…

Rawr.

One period turns to the second. The second turns to the third.

We cheer. We laugh. We scream.

We even engage in a friendly bet on the outcome of the game with the guys seated behind us from the other school.

"Five bucks says we score the final goal!" Bethany boasts, winking at me conspiratorially.

They laugh. "You're on. But if they win, you have to come out with us later."

We have giggle fits, laughing at the idea of going out with random guys to the bar, guys from the opposing team, no less.

As if.

As the game progresses—it’s back and forth. They score; we score. Time on the clock passes. Late in the third period, we manage to gain the upper hand, thanks in no small part to Brodie’s impressive skills on the ice.

With each slick pass and lightning-fast shot, my admiration for him grows tenfold.

My admiration and attraction.

"Looks like your man is on fire today, Lizzy," Bethany teases, a glint in her eye as Brodie makes a spectacular save at the goal.

I grin, unable to contain my pride. "I know, right? He’s so fucking adorable.”

I can’t even take it.

I cannot wait for this game to be over so I can rush home and wait for him to text me. I can’t wait to tell him I was here.

"They’re superhuman when they’re out there. I almost feel sorry for the other team."

“Hey, don’t feel sorry for the other team. They were up a goal in the second period.”

Listen to me! I sound like I know what I’m talking about.

So impressed with myself.

Then. As the final buzzer goes off, the flashing lights and blaring horn cause an outbreak of cheers as our team emerges victorious. Once again, we erupt into applause, our voices blending with the roar of the crowd, and I know for a fact I’m not going to have a voice when I wake up tomorrow, but I do not care.

THIRTY-ONE

Brodie: Hey.

Lizzy: Hey yourself…

Brodie: What are you up to?

Lizzy: Well. I’m working in my agenda… what about you?

Brodie: Just got home.

Brodie: Actually, I didn’t just get home. I’ve been home for about an hour—took a long hot shower and now I’m chillin.

Lizzy: So…. Why didn’t you tell me you had a game this afternoon?

Brodie: It was a scrimmage.

Lizzy: I mean, it was a game. YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME.

Brodie: I didn’t think you’d care?

Lizzy: Don’t even start that nonsense. But guess what?

Brodie: ???

Lizzy: You popped my cherry tonight.

Brodie: Uh. LOL what cherry?

Lizzy: I was at your hockey game tonight. You looked seriously hot out there on the ice! HOT HOT HOT

Brodie: Seriously? Why didn't you tell me you were coming?

Lizzy: Because I didn’t know I was going. I was screwing around before and Bethany’s actually the one who forced me to go out.

Brodie: Screwing around doing what?

Lizzy: Working on my day planner.

Brodie: What’s a day planner?

Lizzy: You don’t know what a day planner is?

Brodie: Are you making FUN of me? Rude.

Lizzy: Sorry, I’m not. I forget sometimes that guys don’t know about girl stuff. My day planner is a calendar book. I like to, uh—decorate it?

Brodie: Oh. That sounds cool.

Lizzy: It’s not. It’s pretty dorky, especially considering I barely use it to keep track of stuff.

Brodie: Why have it then?

Lizzy: Cause it’s cute!

Lizzy: Anyway—congrats on winning the game. It was my first!

Brodie: Your first? Hockey game?

Lizzy: Game game. I’ve never been to one. It was so freaking exciting, I think I might have gotten a little tipsy. We had beer.

Brodie: Gotta have beer!

Lizzy: I have to admit…there's something incredibly attractive about a guy who dominates on the ice like you do.

Brodie: Dominates? Not sure about that but I'll take it as a compliment! But I do always feel like a different person when I step out onto the ice. Like I'm in my element, you know. Not as awkward as I am in real life.

Lizzy: Who told you you were awkward. I want names. NAMES.

Lizzy: It was like you were in a zone—nothing else mattered except the game. It was incredibly sexy to watch.

Brodie: You think hockey is sexy?

Lizzy: OBVIOUSLY.

Brodie: How? Have you not seen the uniform?

Lizzy: Have you not seen yourself OUT of the uniform? The secret is to picture what’s underneath…

Brodie: I’m afraid to ask if you were watching me and picturing what was under my jersey.

Lizzy: Of course I was, don’t be ridiculous. Obviously I was picturing you naked. Sweaty, naked. You know how it is…

Brodie: LOL Do I know how it is?

Lizzy: Stop answering questions with questions.

Brodie: Sorry, I’m only doing it because I have no idea what else to say.
